At ShinyShiny we maintain a healthy interest in both online dating sites and things with silly names, so of course we were delighted to hear about new online dating site called “Fatepod”, launching on Monday.
I don’t know where the “pod” bit comes from, but the “Fate” bit is there for a very good reason. Oh yes. This website wants to encourage people to capitalise on the accidental meetings that happen in real life. You know when you brush against someone on a train platform, stare deep into their china-blue eyes, fall in love, before being pushed away from each other by the crowds changing from the Charing Cross to the Bank branch of the Northern line? Those times.
Previously they’d have just slipped away from you, unless you took out a personals ad in one of those city freepapers.. and that basically is the role this website hopes to fill.
My first reservation about this website was – well, isn’t this what Facebook does? But then, I guess it isn’t, because you really need someone’s name to find them again on Faceboo. This in theory is more like what the personals section in Gumtree was like before they closed it last year…
Fatepod allows users to upload an ‘encounter’ or search listed ‘encounters’ – something along the lines of “Were you the guy with the red tie that cast me a look outside Starbucks?” Founder Louise explains that if the other person then logs on to the site and sees the post, the two individuals can start to exchange messages and eventually meet up.
Louise says: “It’s the opportunist’s way to date. Before the site, if you met someone on your lunch hour or waiting for a train and realised you had a ‘spark’ but didn’t have the confidence to ask for the other person’s phone number, the opportunity to make contact is lost. Fatepod offers a second chance – a chance to change fate.”
WELL. You’ll have to wait till Monday till it’s up. To register you need to send a text which will result in a reply that contains a unique registration code. Text messages cost £3 plus your standard network charge. This will give full access to all the available features on the site for 3 months.
