CES 2015: Hands-on with Samsung’s adorably small 1TB portable SSD

When you think of portable storage you probably think of things like micro SD cards or USB sticks that go up to about 64GB in size. That’s clearly not what Samsung wants it to be about, which is why it announced high capacity portable SSD T1 at CES 2015″>CES 2015.

Editor Holly Brockwell got the chance to see this much-talked-about SSD T1 in the flesh at CES, and you can hear what she thought in the video.

The new drives will be available with 250GB, 500GB, or 1TB of storage, and are described as being ‘smaller than a business card’. I’d say smaller is a relative term, since they are considerably thicker, but it’s not that much bigger than a standard USB stick and could easily go unnoticed in your pocket.

The drive supports USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, and promises to be much faster and durable than regular external hard drives. That’s nothing out of the ordinary for an SSD, but Samsung has promised that the SSD T1 will be able to withstand large shocks as well as featuring a ‘Dynamic Thermal Guard’ which will protect the data in extreme temperatures.

The SSD T1 will cost $180 (£118), $300 (£197), and $600 (£395) when they go on sale later this year. That doesn’t seem particularly cheap, but if you consider the price and durability of regular SSDs then they’re actually fairly reasonably priced. Plus you might not have to splash out for more internal storage in your new phone if you have one of these in your pocket.
