Great news for anyone who uses mobile gadgets (which would be, err, most people) scientists at Stanford have just created a battery that lasts four times longer than current models.

The prototype uses lithium-sulphur in place of the lithium-ion technology resulting in 80% more capacity.

Not likely to be commercially available for a few years – the new battery tech could be what is needed to catapault us finally into the mobile web. As ReadWriteWeb point out – we’ve got wifi but still need to charge up gadgets every day. Better batteries could encourage more gadgets to go mobile and encourage gadget makers to include more features, such as multi-tasking on the iPhone.
