Apple has a patent for a GoPro-style remote controlled camera

There are a lot of very lucrative markets in tech these days, and it almost seems as though Apple is involved in them all. Not quite, but the company has just been awarded a brand new patent for an action camera.

According to Patently Apple, the patent was originally filed in 2012 and features a camera very similar to the GoPro that can be controlled remotely. The patent specifically mentions inherent weaknesses in GoPro’s products which it intends to address.

What weaknesses you might ask? Nothing too concrete, but it does mention having multiple mounting points to avoid the need for multiple accessories and sensors to film multi-directional videos.

The camera itself is designed to work on its own, or remotely with a watch-like remote. Whether that remote would be substituted for the Apple Watch is unclear, but considering the patent mentions an underwater microphone the remote would have to be waterproof. The first-gen Apple Watch is not, so we’ll have to see about that.

Presumably, should this camera ever get released, there will be an official Apple Watch app that will allow control of the camera to some degree.

Of course this is just a patent for now, and there is zero guarantee that Apple will ever go out and make a GoPro-style action cam. We’ll let you know if any more information pops up, but I wouldn’t hold your breath.
