5 TV shows to get stuck into now Game of Thrones is over – including Sense 8 and Hannibal

Okay, okay we know it’s not over for good, but it’s going to be a looong time until the politics, dragons and scary white things of Westeros return to our screens again give George R. R. Martin has allegedly not even finished the next book in the series yet.

So what can you get your teeth into next? Well, there’s a whole range of amazing shows in full-swing, as well as a few that are just kicking off to appeal to you, whether you want gritty drama, time-travelling fantasy or some telepathic sci-fi. Here’s our rundown of five shows we recommend moving on to while you’re in mourning for GoT (and not to mention THAT character).

sense8

1. Sense 8: for fantasy, sci-fi and drama

If it’s the fantasy element of Game of Thrones that appealed to you, then Sense 8 will be right up your street. Granted it’s not as grand as dragons and zombies, but it’s all about telepathic connections. Bringing real world drama and fascinating personalities into the awesome realm of action, fantasy and excitement that The Wachowskis (of The Matrix fame) are so well-known for.

You can watch the first season of Sense 8 on Netflix now.

2. House of Cards: for politics and game-playing

If you enjoyed the politics, back-stabbing and power hungry characters from Game of Thrones, then you’re going to love House of Cards. It’s not new, but it’s considered one of the best political dramas out there, following the tumultuous career and personal life of politician Frank Underwood. It’s been critically acclaimed for its script, picture and acting, with Kevin Spacey stealing the show as the lead role – and his on-screen wife Claire, played by Robin Wright, is just as impressive.

You can watch every season of House of Cards on Netflix now.

3. Outlanders: for fantasy and time travel

Outlanders is a historical, time-travelling journey set in Scotland in the years, well, all kinds of years. We won’t spoil it for you too much, but it’s an entertaining tangle of magic, love and war. Great if you often find Game of Thrones a little too gory and OTT. Outlanders is much, well mostly, nicer.

You can watch the first season of Outlanders on Amazon Prime and Amazon Instant Video now.

4. Hannibal: for dark and terrifying gore

If your favourite parts of Game of Thrones were the gore, the terror and the slaughter, then you’re in for a real treat with Hannibal. Based on the characters and key stories from Red Dragon by Thomas Harris, it’s focused on the fascinating relationship between Hannibal Lecter and FBI investigator Will Graham. It’s visually beautiful, at times particularly hard to watch, but purely brilliant. Especially for fans of the movies.

You can watch seasons one and two of Hannibal on Amazon Prime and Amazon Instant Video now.

Vikings-Gallery-10-4-P

5. Vikings: for history lovers (kinda)

Available on Amazon in the UK, this Irish Canadian historical drama is all about the ancient myths of a Viking called Ragnar Lothbrok. A big deal in Norse legend who was believed to have raided England and France and then later became kind of Denmark.

You can watch every season of Vikings on Amazon Prime and Amazon Instant Video now.
