A new 12-inch Retina Macbook Air could enter production very soon

Over the course of 2014 there have been an awful lot of rumours about the possibility of various updated Macs, including a Macbook Air with a Retina display. Apple didn’t announce anything Mac related, but as the year draws to a close a new rumour suggests that the Macbook Air people have been waiting for could be on its way very soon.

We have no idea exactly when the new Macbook will be released, but according to a report from Digitimes Quanta will be taking it into production in the first quarter of 2015. Apparently this is following a ‘pilot production’ that happened earlier this year. Presumably, that fact is true, it would explain where the previous rumours came from.

Along with a 12-inch Retina display, the new Macbook Air is supposed to come with a new fanless design made possible by Intel’s new super-efficient Core M processor. The processor works by improving a machine’s performance without pumping out too much heat.

So if there was a trial production, why didn’t we get full-scale production sooner? According to the Digitimes report, there have been some issues with yield. Fortunately the issue has been rectified, meaning mass production can begin.

This is a rumour for the time being, and you should be wary about yet another story promising a new Retina Macbook Air. It’s not all bad though, because the same report promises that the Apple Watch will also be going into mass production soon, just in time for that promised early-2015 launch date.
