Rumour: Samsung’s looking to launch its own streaming service

Let’s have a quick run through of all the major TV and movie streaming services that are currently available for us to subscribe to. I can count at least five that are widely available in the UK, and I can think of a couple more that are available in the US. Well reports claim that Samsung intends to join them and start its own streaming service.

It’s worth mentioning now that nothing here has come through the official channels, i.e. from Samsung itself, so treat it as a rumour for the time being.

A report from The Information (paywall) claims that Samsung is working on a Netflix-style subscription-based video streaming service that will focus on original short-form content. Reportedly known internally as ‘Volt’, the project is supposedly headed by Samsung executive vice president of media solutions John Pleasants.

Samsung apparently wants to charge ‘a few dollars a month’ for the service, which some are predicting to be exclusive to Samsung Galaxy devices. A few dollars doesn’t sound like a lot, but that’s a remarkably vague pricing plan.

Let’s be honest, do we really need another streaming service? Personally I’m not sure if it would make people switch to a Samsung phone. Maybeif it was free then it could become a nice little incentive.
