A new rumours suggests Apple wants a 3D display on the iPhone 7

Even though we’ve only just seen the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, it’s clear that Apple will be hard at work figuring out what the next iPhone is going to involve. Whether it’s the  iPhone 7, or the iPhone 6S, a new rumour suggests it’ll have a glasses-free 3D display.

According to Economic Daily News, a Chinese publication, Apple is working on a hardware and software ecosystem to support 3D displays — something that the iPhone 6 is reportedly unable to achieve.

Back 2011 Apple actually filed a patent for such a device, then called the ‘interactive holographic display’. The technology supposedly involves displaying 3D holograms that users could then interact with using multi-touch gestures.

3D displays are nothing new in the world of smartphones, but they haven’t exactly been popular with the consumer. Just ask Amazon. While there’s a good chance that this won’t be the same sort of terrible 3D you get when you buy an overpriced cinema ticket, it’s still worth asking whether it’s really necessary to have 3D displays in a smartphone.

But it is still very early days to be trying to figure out what’s involved in the next iPhone, an considering this is an unconfirmed rumour we should not be treating this information as if it’s actually going to happen.
