Jawbone Move: meet the new super cheap activity tracker

Today Jawbone unveiled its new high-end activity tracker, UP3. But for those who don’t want to spend a small fortune on a wearable they may or may not be able to commit to, the brand has also unveiled a £39.99 device built for fitness tracking newbies: meet Move.

If Move looks a little familiar, that’s because it’s essentially a Fitbit Zip and Misfit Flash hybrid. The small, disc-shaped device can track your steps, exercise, the calories you’ve burned and captures some info about your sleep too (but nowhere near as much as its big brother, the UP3). Everything is served up on Jawbone’s UP app and integrates into the brand’s renamed Smart Coach – an intelligent coaching system that provides you with tips about how to improve your health and fitness throughout the day.

Like the Misfit Shine and Flash, you have to press the Move in order to see how well you’re progressing throughout the day, you can get a pretty accurate gauge based on how many LED lights flash at once. It’ll also tell you the time if you press it once more, which is handy if you want a tracker and watch rolled into one.

The Move is made from an anodized aluminium, which makes it really durable, and has five different colours with corresponding clips and weird swirly patterns and starbursts etched onto them. You can choose wear you wear the Move, it works placed straight into a pocket, you can get a separate wrist strap to wear it with pride or you can attach it to a belt loop, sock or bra (this actually works surprisingly well and isn’t uncomfortable) with its own little clip.

Because it’s small and tracks relatively basic data in comparison to other devices, its battery will last a whole six months. Even when it does run out it’ll be powered up again with the same kind of battery used to power a watch, so it’s easy to keep juiced up.

The Move isn’t a ground-breaking device, but it is a great tracker for those keen to make long-lasting changes to their lifestyle without the commitment of buying something more expensive and more obvious. It’s also a great way for newbies to get to grips with the Jawbone UP app before they give the UP24 or UP3 a whirl.

The Jawbone Move will be £39.99 and is available for pre-order from Jawbone.com now and from late November in select colours at Apple, John Lewis, Selfridges, Dixons and Amazon.
