HTC unveils the selfie-tastic Desire Eye with a 13MP front camera

We all knew that HTC was very likely to be announcing a new photography-based phone, but while the rumours indicated that it was a new version of the HTC One M8, we have ended up with a brand new phone: the HTC Desire Eye with an astonishing 13MP front-facing camera.

Because megapixels aren’t everything, the front camera also comes with zoom, auto focus, a BSI sensor , f/2.2, 22mm wide-angle lens, 1080p video capturing, and dual-LED flash. The rear camera is similar, but with a a f/2.0, 28mm lens. Both cameras come with HTC Camera Software perks including Screen Share, Split Capture, Auto Selfie, Voice Selfie, and Crop Me in functionality.

The phone itself comes with a 5.2-inch 1080p display, a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a 2,400 mAh battery, and microSD expansion up to 128GB.

There’s no word on price, but the Desire Eye comes in a plastic chassis, rather than the metal of the One M8, and will start shipping to the UK sometime next month.

  • The strength of the Desire Eye isn’t in its 13MP cameras but its unibody design and flagship-baiting specifications. The excellent screen and front-facing speakers mean this handset punches above its weight.
