Friends is coming to Netflix: could we BE any more excited?

How you doin’? If it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month or even your year, here’s something that could put a smile on your face: Friends is coming to Netflix. Isn’t that fantastic? And not ‘Kick-you-in-the-crotch, spit-on-your-neck fantastic,’ the real thing.

The video streaming service has announced that all ten seasons of the show will be available to stream starting on 1 January 2015. What better way to ring in the new year/nurse your epic hangover than to relive the time Joey put The Shining in the freezer, Rachel made a beef trifle, or Monica and Chandler proposed to each other and couldn’t stop crying? (Aw.)

Not to mention all of Ross’s weddings and divorces. (‘PIVOT!’)

Hard as it is to believe, the show ended in 2004, and while other sitcoms have tried to copy its seemingly effortless ‘group of friends hanging out’ formula, none have captured the same blend of chemistry, characters we care about, and great comic timing. To put it in Friends terms, it’s our lobster.

But before you start planning which of your favourite episodes to watch first, we should probably mention one teeny little flaw in Netflix’s news. Friends is only going to be available to stream in the US and Canada, at least at first.

When it comes to the UK, well, sadly, we’re still on a break. But we often get stuff after US Netflix, even if we have to wait a little longer than we’d like, and this is the first time the show’s been available on any streaming service, so it’s entirely possible it’ll expand.

So I’m still rooting for the amount of online excitement the announcement is generating on this side of the pond to convince the show’s owners, Warner Brothers, to let us watch our fave episodes ASAP. I mean, it’s only fair. We forgave them for those Fergie and Richard Branson cameos, after all.
