Tesco has abandoned the Hudl smartphone

Back in May Tesco announced that it would be following up its well received Hudl tablet with a Hudl smartphone, one that was supposed to be comparable with the Samsung Galaxy S5. Sadly Robin Terrell, Tesco’s multichannel director, has revealed that plans for the Hudl smartphone have been put on hold, perhaps indefinitely.

In a statement reported at Mrketing Week, Terrel said “we were confident that we could offer customers something we saw was lacking in the mobile market: an affordable, quality 4G smartphone handset”. But in the past four months a number of affordable 4G smartphones have been released, probably putting a crimp into Tesco’s plans.

It’s not clear whether or not plans for the Hudl 2 have been cancelled, but if you are upset about the cancelled phone then there are a number of alternatives available. [Marketing Week via TechRadar]
