iPhone 6 Launch: Apple unveils two models, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

At today’s highly-anticipated Apple event in Cupertino, California, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook has unveiled not one but two new models of its super popular smartphone, the iPhone. The first is called the iPhone 6 and its bigger brother is the iPhone 6 Plus.

A slow-mo (or at least we think it was slow-mo, the live stream has been pretty dire) video panned around the two new devices showing off their curved edges and rounded corners. The team explained that the back of both handsets is made of anodised aluminium, and although they’re different sizes they’re essentially the same design.

The iPhone 6 is the smaller device with a 4.7 inch display, it’s 6.9mm thick and has a 1334 X 750 pixel resolution to boot. In comparison, the iPhone 6 Plus is much bigger, with a 5.5 inch display and a 1920 X 1080 pixel resolution, although it’s only 7.1mm thick. However, both are considered to sport ‘retina HD’ displays, according to Apple.

We’ll delve into each device in more depth over the course of the night, but we were happy to see a few cool demos when the handsets were first introduced, like the landscape mode for the home screen, which brings the iPad experience to your mobile:

There was also a new feature that Apple calls ‘reachability’, allowing users to drag the screen into the bottom half to use the top half as they please.

In terms of what the handsets are packing inside, there’s a brand new A8 processor in both, a 64 bit chip that presents us with a 25% faster CPU performance than past iPhones, as well as 50% faster graphic performance.

Many of you will also be happy to hear that the batteries in both devices are massively improved on previous models. Apple displayed a graphic that shows both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are set to perform better in all areas, including video and 3G browsing.

This story is developing.
