You can buy a stupidly large 512GB SD card for £559

Storage is cheaper than it’s ever been, and now you can get a 128GB SD card for about £30. Ten years ago that would have been impossible, and even if it wasn’t it would have been anywhere near as cheap. Today SanDisk announced that it has a brand new high-capacity 512GB SD card that’s probably far more expensive than the camera you’ll be using it with.

The SanDisk Extreme PRO® SDHC/SDXC™ UHS-I card retails for £559, and SanDisk are claiming it’s the highest capacity card in the world. All that, and most people would probably only use it to take pictures of their pets to share with strangers on the internet. Maybe.

That’s not SanDisk’s plan, though, this monstrosity is primarily aimed at people who want to shoot video in 4K. 4K needs an insane amount of storage unless you compress it, and compression could ruin the quality somewhat. In case you didn’t realise how huge 4K resolution is, it’s twice the size of 1080p, and 1080p takes up a crazy amount of space as it is.

Chances are that even people filming in 4K will have trouble filling up 512GB without a serious amount of effort, but considering this tiny little chip has more storage space than a lot of laptops it could be incredibly handy as a portable back-up.
