BlackBerry is ‘researching wearables’, but not in the way you might think

John Sims, the president of BlackBerry’s enterprise solutions, has said that the company has been doing some research into wearable computers. Don’t go expecting a BlackBerry smartwatch anytime soon, though, because it just sounds as though the company is only looking for ways to bring BBM to existing smarwatches and smartglasses.

His exact words were, “We’re doing internal research on different wearables. I would love to have… BBM on a wearable. It’s definitely an area of research for us.”

While there are undoubtedly a number of BlackBerry fans who would love to see the company release a smartwatch (the number three comes to mind), it probably isn’t a very wise move. It’s been no secret that BlackBerry has been struggling since the rise of the smartphone, and considering smartwatches have struggled to become desirable in the eyes of the consumer it would likely be a wasted venture.

That being said, everybody loves BBM and the idea that we could, one day, see BBM come to wearable devices is quite exciting.
