Samsung Announces Gear S, a 3G enabled smartwatch

Samsung has unveiled the Gear S to the world, which it claims will deliver the most advanced wearable experience yet. What’s so special about it? Well similar to what the rumours have suggested, this is a smartwatch that doesn’t need to be tied to a smartphone to make it useful because it has 3G built in. This, of course, means that the Gear S is capable of making and receiving phone calls by itself, as well as forwarding calls from your smartphone.

The watch runs on Samsung’s Tizen OS, has a 1.0 GHz processor, a 2-inch curved AMOLED display, 4GB of internal storage, 512MB of RAM, a 300 mAh battery that’s supposed to last two days,  and has a health and fitness monitor that utilises Samsung’s S Health and Nike+ Running.  It’s also water and dust resistant, so you don’t have to worry about the elements affecting it on the go.

It doesn’t look like Samsung is hoping the Gear S will replace the smartphone altogether, but rather will give people alternate means of communication if their phone is somehow out of action. In the meantime, it does everything a regular smartwatch does and more.

The Gear S will be available sometime in October, but UK pricing and an exact date has not yet been revealed.
