Apple rumours: More iWatch delays, iPhone 6 resolution, curved iWatch?

Those Apple rumours just keep coming, especially coming up to the iPhone 6′s rumoured launch window, and keeping up with them all is proving to be a difficult task. To keep you up to speed, here is today’s round-up of the biggest Apple rumours and news.

1. iOS 8 code holds a potential clue for the iPhone 6’s resolution

So far we’ve heard almost nothing about what resolution the iPhone 6’s display will be. Some have predicted that it will include Apple’s famous Retina display, but we haven’t had any sort of confirmation. Well now we have some clues, and it looks like those predictions weren’t that far off the mark — sadly it sounds like another case of Apple falling behind the competition somewhat.

Based on codes found within the beta version of iOS 8, it’s estimated that the iPhone 6’s resolution will be 828 x 1472. It’s being assumed that this is relating to the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 rather than the 5.5-inch model. While each phone is apparently set to exceed the 300ppi mark that Apple has determined “Retina quality”, it’s still rather disappointing compared to the competition who have been including full HD and even quad HD displays in their handsets with pixel density closer to 400ppi than 300.

But, in the end, we don’t know how accurate the number in iOS 8 are — especially since it’s still in beta. We can speculate and worry all we want but we won’t know anything for sure until Apple tells us itself. [Phone Arena via Ubergizmo]

2. An analyst has reiterated his belief that the iWatch launch will be delayed until next year

The release of the iWatch has had almost as much speculation as the iPhone 6’s sapphire glass display, with KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reiterating that he believes Apple are struggling with iWatch production, and that the wearable won’t be available for purchase until next year. Does he have any evidence to support this? Not really, just bold claims and predictions based on his assumptions of what the iWatch will include. Such features include a flexible OLED sapphire glass display, and more thorough waterproofing than the iPhone or the iPad.

It’s worth emphasising that Ming-Chi Kuo has no evidence to speak of, and only ever says that he believes this is the case. It could well be that all his predictions and assumptions are incorrect, and that Apple is ready to launch the iWatch before the end of the year. 3. Apple has been awarded a patent for curved displays

According to Patently Apple, the company has just been awarded patents for curved displays that could make it into future versions of the iWatch. How it works is nice and straight forward, since it involves a series of curved layers that when assembled form the curved display.

For now, we don’t know if and when Apple will use this technology, and it definitely won’t be appearing on the first iteration of the iWatch. However, it does open up a whole host of possibilities for curved devices and displays in the future. [Patently Apple via Business Insider]
