Apple rumours: iPhone 6 processors, and more on sapphire glass production

Those Apple rumours just keep coming, and keeping up with them all is proving to be a difficult task. To keep you up to speed, here is today’s round-up of the biggest Apple rumours and news.

1. The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 might have a faster processor than the 4.7-inch model

It’s been obvious for a while now that the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 isn’t just going to be the same as the 4.7-inch model but with a larger screen. Rumours have been already been circulating that the larger model will be the one to include a sapphire glass display, and that the TouchID button might be similar (we don’t know how yet), but now it seems that it won’t be these relatively minor differences — the 5.5-inch model might be coming with a faster processor.

There is no word on what kind of processor each model will have, but we’re getting to a point where an announcement is imminent which means we won’t have long to wait before we find out for sure. [Phones Review]

2. Production of massive amounts of sapphire glass has apparently begun

Rumours have been circulating that suggested that the iPhone 6 will not be having a sapphire glass display for the simple reason that Apple hasn’t been shipping enough of the raw materials to its manufacturers. Despite those claims GT Advanced Technologies, the company responsible for Apple’s sapphire, has revealed that they are going to be mass producing the material fairly soon.

Tom Gutierrez, the CEO of GT Advanced Technologies said, “The build-out of our Arizona facility, which has involved taking a 1.4 million square foot facility from a shell to a functional structure as well as the installation of sapphire growth and fabrication equipment, is nearly complete and we are commencing the transition to volume production.”

Whether or not this means we’ll be seeing sapphire glass on the iPhone 6 is not known, it seems unlikely given how late they are in starting mass production the material. Then again Apple could go ahead and surprise us. [UberGizmo]
