10 Music making apps for the iPhone and iPad: GarageBand, Korg and Figure
It’s not so long ago that music recording was just for people who could afford to hire a professional studio and engineer. To have the self belief that those hundreds of pounds per day weren’t being wasted came from many hours of tuition, rehearsal and performance (or in some cases just a massive ego. Artists with egos – what?).

Going for the record of most instruments accessible in a mobile recording app, iSequence offers a cool 160 sounds, from drum kits to acoustic instruments to synths.
The 8 track sequencer means you can build up complex arrangements and use multiple instruments on a single track, and the sampler allows uploading, recording or pasting of samples to create custom instruments.
For non-virtuoso players (that'd be most of us, then), a clever slow down mode means you can record in real time using the keyboard and get things sounding just right before adding effects, mixing and exporting.
