Top 10 cycling gadgets: See.Sense, Lock8, Firefly and more

Ever since the Olympics, more and more women in the UK are getting on their bikes, with Sport England reporting a 200,000 increase in regular cyclists and this year’s Tour de France kicking off in Yorkshire only adding to our enthusiasm for literally jumping on the saddle. But whether you see yourself as the next Victoria Pendleton or simply like biking to work, you probably want to stay safe, keep track of your fitness progress, and of course, have constant access to your phone. Here are a few gadgets and gizmos to increase your pedal power.

LOCK8

One of the biggest problems when you cycle everywhere is making sure it isn't stolen. Sure, you can use a traditional lock, but you could also come back to find it hacked off and your bike nowhere in sight. The Lock8 is an altogether tougher piece of kit. It has armoured cables that loop around the frame and are connected to a smartphone app. You can lock and unlock your bike from your phone, and if someone is trying to steal it (whether by drill, saw, or hammer), it will notify you immediately, trigger a blaring 120 decibel alarm, and if all else fails, activate a GPS chip so you can track the bike's whereabouts.

It was funded thanks to Kickstarter and won’t start shipping until later this year, but it is available for pre order via the website for $249.
