Flipboard will soon carry all content from the New York Times

The clever and rather beautiful personalised news and social media app Flipboard has teamed up with The New York Times to provide subscribers with a different way of soaking up the publication’s content.

The NY Times already has its own website and application, but this is the first time it’ll allow subscribers to access all of its content through a third party. The thinking behind the partnership is that Flipboard users who also subscribe to the paper are more likely to read NY Times’ content if it’s alongside other publications, blogs and social networks that they browse through regularly, meaning it’ll now be more integrated into their daily reading routine.

In a post on the NY Times’ Bits blog. Denise Warren, the General Manager of The Times’s website, said:

“We realized that we have an opportunity to enable this kind of access for paying subscribers, and we thought it was something we ought to try and see how users react to it.”

The blog post then went on to state that more than 20% of those that currently subscribe to the paper admitted they often consume content through third party apps already.

However, this is just the first step for the NY Times, as a spokesperson revealed its Everywhere strategy will aim to bring its content to users through more third party apps in the future. For Flipboard the partnership could also mean more opportunities in the long run too, as it clearly has potential to team up with other publications to offer paid for content.

From this Thursday content from the NY Times will be available to those subscribing through Flipboard and even if you don’t subscribe you’ll be able to get a sneak peek.

Flipboard is available from iTunes for free.
