POLL: Will you use Bitly now it's all about bookmarking and less about shortening?

Popular URL shortening service Bitly has had a fancy new redesign over night, which sees a brand new focus on social bookmarking, better profiles and a new iOS app. But will we be swapping our tried and tested social bookmarking tools for a site we usually only visit to shorten things?

According to a new post on the Bitly blog, there are a number of exciting new features being added to the service, here’s a quick rundown:

Easily save, share and discover links — they’re called bitmarks, like bookmarks.

Instantly search your saved bitmarks.

Curate groups of bitmarks into bundles and collaborate on bundles with friends.

Make any bitmark or bundle private or public.

See what friends are sharing across multiple social networks, all in one place.

Save and share links from anywhere with our new bitmarklet, Chrome extension and iPhone app.

Instead of being a site people quickly turn to in order to shorten a URL or get a few basic stats about who’s clicked what, the team are hoping to turn Bitly into something more substantial:

“We want this to be the single best place for you to save and share your links and to discover interesting things from your friends and the entire web.”

It seems that Bitly is becoming much more like Delicious, or even bigger social networks as the focus is on news feeds, beefier profiles and sharing content. But the big question is whether anyone will really be trading in the social bookmarking tools they use already in favour of the new site?

  • Bitly's new focus on bookmarking is interesting, but it's not optimized for having a great many bookmarks. My company's iCrumz.com was designed just for that. Intro: http://bit.ly/iCrumz.
