APP OF THE DAY: cab:app makes hailing cabs safe and electronic

A new mobile app called cab:app aims to revolutionise the way Londoners find black cabs by creating a kind of electronic hailing system. Users simply log into the app and hail a cab from wherever they are, even if they’re still at home, at work or in a bar or restaurant.

Once someone has hailed a taxi from within the app, the closest cabbies are alerted. One will then accept the job and be guided to the passenger via GPS. The passenger can also be directed to the pick up point too, meaning no angry waiting around on street corners or hailing occupied cab after occupied cab after occupied cab…

You also get all of the details about the cab driver once the job has been accepted too, so you know there’s no chance of you getting into a random car AND you can ask for any extra requirements when you first hail, like wheelchair access.

The London taxi driver behind the app, Peter Schive, saw a gap in the market after he spoke to customers and found many were weary about standing on street corners waiting to find cabs that often never turned up:

“As a London cabbie myself, I’ve spent years listening to passengers complain about how difficult it is to find a taxi in the capital when you need one. It became clear to me that there were a number of issues that could easily be resolved using the latest technology, providing passengers with a safe, reliable and convenient way to hail a cab at the touch of a button.”

The app seems like a brilliant idea, not only is it going to keep Londoners safer but it’ll stop them getting cold and irritated too. We just hope enough cabbies are putting it to good use, after all it’s not going to be as effective if only 10 across the capital are using it!

Available for most smart phones from the cab:app website for Free.
