We hope you’ve all had a very productive week. It is once again time for a quick look at what’s been going on in social media.

At the beginning of the week, we decided to collate a list of the top 30 UK brands on Twitter, by number of followers. You can check out which brands made the cut here.

Check-in on Foursquare to get free cocktail
From this week Foursquare users who check-in for the first time to selected T.G.I. Friday’s restaurants will receive a Long Island Iced Tea cocktail on the house. Offering real world ‘treats’ through the social sharing website has been happening for a while in the US now, but will a one-off freebie be enough to tempt Britons?

MySpace gets a makeover
News Corp owned, MySpace unveiled a new beta site, re-branding itself as a ‘social entertainment’ destination in an attempt to persuade Generation Y to come back to the service. Will the opportunity to discover content and connect with other fans with similar interest (music, celebrities, films, TV and games) be enough to compete against big brother Facebook?

Sunderland is most connected on Facebook
A report by Experian Hitwise suggests that people in Sunderland use Facebook more than anyone else in the UK. Overall, the report found that Facebook accounted for 55% of all of Britain’s visits to social networks in the past year.

Global comms powerhouse WPP invests in Facebook management system Buddy Media
WPP, a world leader in advertising and marketing services, announces that its digital arm is investing $5m (¬£3.14m) into Buddy Media, a Facebook management system used by some of the world’s leading brands. WPP’s investment will enable it to incorporate Buddy Media’s platform into its technological products, so that brands can easily integrate Facebook-targeted marketing into their campaigns and monitor their effectiveness.

The state of social media
And insighful infographic on the state of social media based on EConsultancy’s social media survey appeared. According to the stats, 83% expect investment in social media to increase over the next year.

Addressing grave matters with social media
Another infographic has done the circuit this week. Making it to the front page of Digg, Reddit and Yahoo! Buzz, iMortuary scoured the Internet to find odd and bizarre facts related to death throughout culture, history and even celebrity. Presented on a virtual headstone, this is a must read for anyone who loves weird facts.

Trick or tweet?
Halloween is like Marmite, either you love it or hate it. This year, some brands have decided to target consumers through social media, and EConsultancy shares four examples of Halloween-themed social media campaigns ‘that use social media platforms to engage people in the most ghoulish ways possible’.

Will Facebook rule the (online) world one day?
Everyone seems to be copying Facebook these days. Most recent is Flickr, which has introduced a ‘people you may know’ feature that lets you find and connect with Flickr users you may know. Old news for Facebook, the people at Flickr seemed quite excited about this new feature.
