Jailbreaking your iPhone to land you in jail?

As if it’s not boring enough that driving recklessly, shoplifting nail varnish and consuming magic mushrooms is illegal, the US Government is on its way to stamping the law onto every Yankee geek’s favourite activity: jailbreaking the iPhone.

Apple will tell you they’re pushing for this to prevent unscrupulous people creating bugs and low grade apps for the phone, but what they probably won’t mention is that when an app is bought through the iTunes store, they make 30%.

They’re claiming that it breaks the Digital Millennium Copyright Act as copyright infringement, which would also make it illegal for anyone supplying the jailbreaking software, or posting instructions on the process.

  • I bought it, I own it, I shall do WTF like with it! – I can sorta see the case for the ones lease hired through the phone company, but not the outright purchased ones.

  • you mean shiplifting nail varnish isn’t legal? damn. clearly that’s where I’ve been going wrong all these years….
