Nokia launches the N97 Superphone

The N97 has been announced today at Nokia World, and the overwhelming response seems to be ‘that’s next year’s upgrade sorted’. It boasts (and yes, there’s a fair amount of boasting going on) a 3.5-inch touchscreen as well as a QWERTY keyboard and a mammoth 32GB of memory, which can be expanded to 48GB through a MicroSD card. There’s also a 5 megapixel camera, DVD quality video capture, HSDPA and WiFi.

Social networking fans will be pleased to know there’s instant access to your favourites through one click on the home screen, and Nokia are coining a new term in relation to it: ‘So-Lo’.

So-Lo refers to your Social Location, which essentially means the A-GPS will tag your position, giving you the potential to update your networking friends with not just your thoughts, but the location you’re having these thoughts. There’s already a similar thing available through one of the Twitter iPhone apps, but it’s yet to be integrated so it’s immediately obvious which of your friends are close by.

This wonderphone is going to be available in Q1 of next year, so you’ve been warned. Don’t sign a new contract just yet.
