You'd be forgiven for thinking Tumblr is just a crazy world of GIF images and cheesy quotes, but as we've seen in the past from our Top ten Tumblr blogs you should be following and Top 20 Tumblrs posts, it can be much more than that with the right person (or brand, or magazine, or made up person) at the helm.

Over the past few years there's been an influx of publications that started life as plain old websites, or shock horror printed pieces of actual paper, that have successfully integrated Tumblr into their current offering. Many of these popular magazines have then been using their shiny new Tumblr blogs to store photos and images, promote external content, share snippets from longer features, or even build it up to act as a separate Frankenstein-like entity.

It's easy to see why these kinds of publications are attracted to the world of Tumblr, it's got a booming community, content is often re-blogged, it's super easy to publish anything and there's nothing as simple and intuitive as the lovely little Tumblr menu bar. Text? Video? Photo? Tumblr will sort that out for you. Oh and did we mention the twee little heart button next to every post?

So here's our collection of the top ten magazines and publications that are already tumblogging, or is it tumbling?

With the iPad becoming more of a staple item in people's lives these days - I sure would like the third generation iPad that is rumoured to be announced in not too long - one dilemma us women will face is where and how to bring it with you. It's not big enough to warrant its own over-the-shoulder full-on laptop case, it's too small to keep in the pocket of your blazer, and while that designer bag fits it perfectly you have to be careful of keys scratching the screen.

Luckily, there are quite a few iPad covers available to keep your favourite gadget scratch and smudge free while still looking fashionable. So whatever you are after, I'm sure you'll find the iPad case that is just right...

Taking good photos can seem so difficult and it's understandable if you think it is a complicated process that requires expensive cameras, big lenses and turning your bedroom into a dark room. Of course all of the above are probably necessary if you want exceptional pictures, but luckily for all hobby photo enthusiasts out there; there are some very clever apps available that make your run of the mill snaps look picture perfect. And all you need is an iPhone and an eye for a good shot - the latter is more difficult to get a hold of unfortunately...

Since getting my iPhone I've regularly checked the app store to see if any new and fun photo apps have hit the market. Having avoided any too expensive investments so far, my favourite discoveries to date are: Instagram, Hipstamatic, MoreLomo, CameraBag and more recently Phototreats.

Never have adding effects to your photos and sharing them been easier!

Below is a selection of the snaps I've taken while out and about with my iPhone (more details about each app can be found below the photos for those who want to read more).

Which photo apps do you use?

It's here and it's so EXCITING! Ok so few of us have managed to actually get our hands on an iPad 2 yet, but that will change ... eventually.

The future of the iPad case and sleeve market was put into question when Apple included that nifty magnetic shield with the new tablet, but many will still want a little protective padding to avoid scratching the new beauty.

Here's ten sleeves that fit the bill not just to protect the hardware, but these sleeves are also pretty neat in the sense they don't look like they have been made by sports gear manufacturers. We have genuine wool, leather and pretty colours - nothing's too fancy for the best toy of the year.

Your Apple goods are already mighty pretty and shiny, but if you feel you could use some more sparkle then look no further. The Swarovski Crystallized range has covers both for the iPad and iPhone.

It's really a must-see accessory, the crystal backs for the Apple devices. The style is something called the 'Deco Den' trend of Japanese crystal mosaics.

The most frugal option starts at £25 for the 'Diffusion' range, going up to £170 for the 'Shiny' range. The relatively modest iPad accessories will set you back £58.

With today's graphics technology, video games can look like proper works of art. But it wasn't always like that - do you remember the old, basic-looking Atari games, or even the clunkiness of the first Super Mario?

Brooklyn-based artist Cory Arcangel remembers it - and he's feeling nostalgic about it too. Arcangel has placed video gaming tech specs at the heart of his new art exhibition at London's Barbican gallery. Sounds a bit out of left-field, this, but the result is fascinating.

The Barbican presents 14 bowling video games from the 1970s to the 2000s, having hacked each of them to play a loop where the bowler fails to score. The image gallery below gives you an idea of how the games have changed over time. Going to the gallery itself would add a collage of sound from the games, starting with the abstract static of Atari, to Nintendo's bleeps, all the way to the more realistic simulation of bowling sounds of newer PlayStation consoles.

Videogames as art

Arcangel takes a retrospective look at the art of videogames, but there are others now using the medium in a more forward-looking manner. For example, Greg Wohlwend and design partner Mike Boxleiter of Mikengreg, have developed Solipskier for the iPhone, and are already working on their next project.

As pointed out by Flavorwire, which has a nice roundup of videogames as an artistic medium here, the Smithsonian museum in Washington DC is currently preparing a major exhibition on the art of video games. Something is definitely up in the world of gaming - maybe it's because the first generation of gamers are now old enough to really start to feel nostalgic about their youths, technologically primitive as it seems now.

Love it or hate it, it's Valentine's Day on Monday. Cue flowers, cards and dinners for some, for others it may be a case of fish and chips - and not just for the singles as V-day is a challenge for a lot of couples too. So in an effort to provide some comic relief, here are ten fun Valentine's-themed gadgets and apps to put a smile on your faces.

DSC_0305_2.JPGMy name is Geoff Crawford and I am a freelance photographer. Normally I spend my days snapping pictures with my trusty top-end DSLR camera, and I must admit I rarely use my phone to take pics. It only has a two mega pixel camera and the images I have taken have been very poor.

LG Optimus 7_Final1.jpgThe Shiny Shiny team and LG sent me out with the LG Optimus 7 to take images using its five mega pixel camera and here's the result. The pictures were taken in various locations in London from St Pancras station through to a church yard in the west of the city. I specifically went for pictures where I thought the camera would be pushed to the limits of exposure - the difference between dark and light. I didn't use the flash as I rarely use it on my own camera.

The panorama mode was fun and after a bit of practice I found it easy to use. I also liked the phone's screen. It was great for reviewing images and those images certainly look superb on it. I was a little more wary about how they would look when blown up, but you can be the judge of how successful the camera on the phone has been. I am pretty pleased.

Overall I can see why people use the cameras on their phones a little more now. I wouldn't think twice about using a camera on a phone of this quality.

Anyway - have a look at the images and decide for yourself.

The features of the LG Optimus Windows 7 phone explained:

Whoever says technology isn't romantic has been looking in the wrong places. Robots, Facebook games and iPhone apps have all been responsible for bringing people together, and just sometimes that human contact blossoms into the holy bond of sacred matrimony.

After Gerald wrote this post about Deaths by Technology on TechDigest, we though it only right to redress the balance and cover Marriages by Technology too... Here are our five favourite Tech-Enabled Weddings...

946thumb.jpgWith an Operating System that was more popular than Apple's last time we looked - Google Android phones are big and growing quickly. The software is made by Google but gets embedded in phones from all over the price range. Here are five of the top offerings, all capable of rivalling the iPhone 4.

Skimming down the list, the big-hitting Android phones are largely made by Chinese manufacturers HTC, though we also have a contender apiece from Sony Ericsson and Motorola. Lots of more affordable Android handsets are made by the likes of Samsung
Compared to the iPhone Android weaknesses tend to be the battery life - the high-functioning phones will eat through the energy unless you turn off functions like push notifications.

Arguably the Android app store's easy-going attitude to apps means that there's no quality control and the variety of handsets means that some apps can render weirdly.
The strengths? Well they are usually cheaper, there's greater choice of handsets and contracts and Android apps are on average cheaper than iPhone ones. Oh yes and you're not tied into iTunes and as far as we know, the other phones don't have aerial problems.

eBay is the home of some of the internet's oddest stuff. Let's just say the Virgin Mary turns up in odd places. So we set our intern Jacob a task to find the oddest things ever sold on the site. Here's his list.

Heading poolside this summer? Well, you can ditch the saggy old lilo this year. Because these inflatable bad boys are about to blow it right out of the water.

Check out our gallery for some extra special swim-stuff.

Who cares if the only information she could take back to the Kremlin was the kind of stuff we can all find for ourselves on Wikipedia? Alleged Russian spy Anna Chapman has captured our imaginations: a flame-haired femme fatale embroiled in a twisted tale of Hollywood proportions. Sort of.

To celebrate, we've put together a gallery of gadgets no smart, self-respecting lady spy would be without. (And not an invisible car in sight. Guffaw.)

The weatherman says that barbeque times are upon us. So, ditch those little disposable ones that burn a hole in your decking, and get yourself fitted out with a serious bit of kit.

Our gallery contains some of the best (and most bonkers) barbies on the market. Throw another shrimp on, etc etc.

IWOOT penny farthing.jpg

I'm very much looking forwards to testing the outrageous Penny Farthing from IWOOT in the next couple of days. And when I say 'very much looking forwards to testing' I mean 'terrified I might meet an untimely end on'.

Before I risk life and limb in the name of gadget research, we at Shiny have put together our top five mad-as-a-fish ways to get from A to B. Beats the Northern Line, anyway.

Whether you're off to Bestival or Download this year, you're going to need more than a tent and a clean pair of pants. That's why the team at IWantOneOfThose has put together a list of their essential festival gadgets.

We've picked our favourite five. Scroll through the gallery and see what you need to put o your list...

The past week or so may have been all about the iPhone 4. But, there are a heap of Android smartphones out there that could suit you even better.

Gallery: great 3D TVs for the UK

Comments (1)

As the rain hammers the windows at Shiny Towers (following several days of almost unbelievable gloriousness), we bemoan the unpredictability of the Great British summer. And we start making plans for indoor fun which, for 2010, means one thing: 3D TV. After the flurry of excitable announcements at CES in January, 3D ready sets have at last been touching down in the UK.

See below for some sets that will really bring your living room to life. But remember not to blow your whole budget on these sets - you'll be needing the 3D glasses and other accessories too...

After the inevitable walk of shame back to our fair isles, the England team is going to need some serious cheering up. And so we reckon the first thing they should all do when they get home is spend some of their 'hard-earned' cash.

Below are the (outrageously) expensive gadgets they can blow their Premiership salaries on. (Of course, whether they deserve it or not is a matter of opinion...)
