Hitachi have launched the world's first straight-to-Bluray-disk camcorder, and Susi got up close with it at IFA 2007.

Check out our IFA video round up for more previews from the show.

Post-match analysis: Top 5 IFA stories

IFA has come and gone and we're just about getting over three days of bratwurst and beer. So, in case you missed it, here are the big stories that were announced.

1. Philips launch Aurea
Is it a work of art or is it an AV gimmick? It's very much marketed at women so you're going to be the makers or breakers for this model.

2. Sony launch a new Walkman range
Sony'd new players take DRM-free WMA files, so music might be on its way to be free again. Whether it'll rival what Apple are shortly going to announce remains to be seen...

3. Blu-ray and HD-DVD square up
Blu-ray got in there early with their press conference, but HD-DVD fought back with some decent price cuts. Where will it end?

Philips are getting all West Coast rapper on us, with their latest range of blinging tech accessories. They've partnered with Swarovski, to sprinkle some sparkly goodness and create headphones that look like earrings and USB sticks that look like necklaces. If the idea of crystal-studded earphones appeals, you can take a look at the official site here.

IFA 2007: Hands-on with the new Creative Zen

Alex Roumbas goes hands-on with the rather fetching new Creative Zen at this year's IFA. Does the mighty iPod have some serious competition on its hands? We've since been told that the Zen ought to be on sale starting at £100, so predictions of good value (compared to its rivals) were pretty much on the money.

IFA 07: Nikon launches two entry-level cameras, the L14 and L15

nikon11.jpg
Nikon is showing off their wares here at IFA, with several new cameras added to their CoolPix range. First up, for the entry-level seekers, the L14 has the honour of supposedly having the longest battery life out of the vast barrel of 3x zoomer compact cams. Specs include a savoury 7.1-megapixel sensor, 23MB inbuilt memory (expandable by using SDHC memory cards), 2.4" LCD screen, and is available in black, or to please both genders, in blue and pink.

Nikon is claiming with the power of Greyskull just two Lithium AA batteries the L14 can take up to 1,000 photos. £129.99 is the figure being bandied about for this model, though it's early days yet. The next step up, the L15 comes with 8-megapixels and a 2.8" LCD screen.

Still at the impressive Sharp stand, I snagged a few minutes to talk to Reinhart Buchner, PR Manager for Sharp Europe, about their 108" LCD TV. Unveiled at CES in January this year (you might remember this video I did for it back then, dressed as Hunter S. Thompson, Las Vegas style), it'll be available from next year, when it will still hopefully be the world's largest LCD TV.

Sharp

Oh, the frustration. I wanted to tear through the glass partition and get my hands on these foxy Cyber-shots, take some photos, show you the interface... but I couldn't. But, I could show you how very gorgeous the K770i is, in its sultry, slimline chocolate brown, compared to the lumpen K850i, which takes a step backwards in design even while packing in a 5 megapixel lens.

Boston Acoustics is one of those American brands people have always heard of but are never really sure why. What they don't realise is that they're responsible for churning out gorgeous looking speakers capable of customisation beyond your wildest beliefs. Those wildest beliefs being, err, able to match your speakers with your $899 Habitat jacquard sofa.

Take a look at the above video to see me chat to Robert Follis, representative for the company, and to ogle the new Play Smart range, available in a plethora of sizes and colours.

ifalogo.jpg Susi, Alex, Chris, Ashley and Kat have all stormed Berlin, Germany, en masse for three days full of convention centre-trudging, otherwise known as IFA. No news as yet on what IFA actually stands for, but stay tuned to see if anyone finds out. More importantly, keep checking back here all day for all the latest news concerning consumer electronics - you'll find the latest links here for your reading pleasure...

IFA 07: Video of Sharp's prototype 20mm thick LCD HDTVs

Remember those speccy new LCD TVs Sharp showed off in yesterday's press conference at IFA? Yes, those stick-thin prototypes, just 20mm thick and weighing 25 kilos? Here's video proof they exist, and four different ways of mounting them. I'll take all four, please, Mr. Sharp...

samsung.jpg
Samsung have got a busy few days of it, since they seem to be launching something in pretty much every category. Luckily, we've got our man on the ground, Ashley, to talk us through it, and explain just what's going on, liveblogging from the press conference. And yes, those are his big fat fingers in the picture (along with the YPP2 MP3 player).....

All makers talk about how big they are getting etc (insert huge pinch of virtual salt), but Samsung is claiming some pretty impressive stuff. According to Anthony Marsella on information from research company GFK, Samsung is now the number one CE brand in the UK and also top in TV and set top boxes. In TV Samsung says it is number one in LCD and is now number two in plasma. The UK is apparently the biggest market for Samsung outside of Korea. It also claims to be number one in Europe as a whole too.

TV's have long since been one of the staples for any living room, and now as well as giving you the all important updates on Big Brother it can blend into your decor as well, with the new ring inspired design from LG fusing art and technology. The LF75 and LB75 are HD Ready TV's that feature hidden speakers and a wave inspired panel design. The LF 75 is available in 37 and 42 inch, and features an enhanced 10,000:1 contrast ratio, while the LB75 has 8,000:1 for the 32 inch model and 5000:1 for the 26 inch model. The series offers a lifelike viewing experience, and uses the exclusive LG XD engine to create crystal clear images. The intelligent Eye system optimizes brightness and makes this a world class TV, as well as counters fatigue eye syndrome.

casio_prototype-thumb.jpg

Casio is working on producing the world's fastest-shooting digital camera, and they're showing off the results right here at IFA. The prototype 6 megapixel, 12 x optical zoom cam has a CMOS sensor and high-speed processing chip which works together with image stabilisation to achieve not only high-speed still snapping but also video so fast the human eye can't see it.

The camera's so clever it starts taking shots before you do if you enable Pre-shot Burst Mode, and the video is an impressive 300fps with ultra-slow motion replay. With Susi reporting on the future of Philips' design strategy for women, it's good to get yet another insight into the future at this conference.

At the IFA Philips press conference that reported on earlier today,we the organisers decided that the best way to get the crowd in a pro-Aurea mood was a catchy dance number. Enjoy...

IFA 2007: Philips launch Aurea

aurea.jpg

Susi Weaser reports from IFA: I love Philips press conferences. Already, we've been treated to women dancing in red dresses which have swirled up round their heads. There's been chiffon, seduction music and lots of atmospheric lighting.

We already know a fair amount about Aurea. It's based on Ambilight, but takes it further with colour emitting from all four sides and round the frame. It's 1080p, featuring Philips Perfect Pixel technology, and also has class leading sound.

What they're keen to emphasise is their fashion credentials - they're name dropping more than Charley from Big Brother. Lanvin, Vogue, Wun Kai Wai... all names I'd be more familiar with if I was a fashion journalist rather than technology.

Their point of sale movie, to be used to demonstrate the TV in your local Curry's is not traditional advertising apparently, but a work of art. Ooh err. We're about to get a world premiere.

IFA 07: Live-blogging the Sharp press conference

101_2859.jpg
1300 - Everyone files into a huge auditorium to see what Sharp has to offer for this year's IFA.
1306 - Big graphics are projected onto huge white sheets on the stage, move over Bourne Ultimatum, this show looks incredible. Words flashing up on the screen include, as you'd expect, 'Sharp', 'Aquos' and 'LCD TVs'.
1308 - The white sheets drop to reveal an uber-thin LCD TV encased in a massive sheet of glass, stuck on a revolving wheel. The crowd actually gasps - I know! - and some even clap. I must admit, it's an impressive site, this TV must be one of the thinnest LCDs ever.
1310 - The speaker, Mikio Katayama, announces the new TV which is just a prototype, at 20mm thin on the main display section, 29mm at the thickest part, and weighing less than a bimbo trying to break into Hollywood, at only 25kilos. It has a contrast ratio of 100,000:1, and allegedly has an annual power consumption of just 140kWh, which is 1/2 of the average LCD TV.

lg_lcd_dvr_range.jpgRemember the Time Machine DVR TVs? Well, LG also had new 160GB DVRs with dual digital tuners on display. Each will naturally allow you to watch one program while recording another. They've got Freeview Playback Certification from the UK's Digital TV group, so you can record subtitles and closed captions, in addition to video and audio, as well as intelligently schedule recording times in case some irksomely scheduled footie gets in the way of your X-Factor catchup.

The PC users amongst you might want to check these more computer-orientated products- the first being a dual format external optical drive, featuring a 6x Blu-Ray disc rewriter and 3x HD-DVD reading, as well as lightscribe technology for labelling compatible discs. Also of interest to PC users were the new 20-inch and 22-inch LCD models with improved contrast ration to shorten response times.

LGpost.jpgLG has been telling the world how design-focussed it is being of late and its new launches, including the "Design Art" range of LCD televisions, is living up to this. In a press conference that focussed heavily on LG's design commitment, several new home entertainment products were revealed.

First up were the new Design Art LCD TVs. These 60fps full HD TVs incorporate anti-blurring techology, reduced flicker and look great. They are designed to be complemented by the Design Art Home Cinema System which features HDMI upscaling and curvy speakers inspired by champagne glasses. Of course all this home cinema goodness meant a new projector, the HS101 100 ANSI Lumines, which LGG claims is the world's brightest ultra mobile projector. It bears Chocolate Phone-style soft touch keypad controls, and it'll be available in Europe and the US for 799 Euros.

IFA 07: The NOBI Portable Speaker System

image.jpg

The latest portable speaker has just been showcased, and it's truly tiny, weighing in at 10oz, and 35mm wide. It provides 360 degrees of sound, and offers 24 hours of play time. The NOBI is the result of a partnership between Nokia and Altec Lansing, that works in conjunction with the Nokia's XpressMusic series of MP3 enabled mobiles. The combination of Nokia's phone expertise and Altec's stereo quality provides a pocket sized gadget that packs a lot of punch.
