GO Scam launches lovely baby monitors at CES 2009

CES may be a mere footnote to January now, but as I dig through the pile of press releases I was excited to spot this lovely looking product. It's a portable baby monitor, disguised as a daisy! So apart from the serious cuteness factor, is it a workable piece of kit? I've looked at the specs, and I have to give it resounding thumbs up.

The camera is concealed within the flowers petals, and has a 330 foot wireless transmission range. There's a built in mic for audio recording and feedback, it switches to night vision mode in low light settings, and it can also double as a night light by soft touching the petals.

The Consumer Electronics Show is finally kaput, the stands have been packed away and the buzz is dying down, which can only mean one thing - round-up time.

There was a whole lotta' gadgetry to take in last week and while Susi, Dan and Zara (who are no doubt all feeling the effects of jet lag right now) made their way through CES, equipped with cameras, mics and laptops, I was back in Shiny HQ checking out what's going to change the face of gadgetry for 2009. As with all consumer electronic shows of gargantuan proportions, there's undoubtedly going to be those that disappoint, those that impress and those that'll knock your socks off. So click on the picture below to check out the best of CES so far (well according to me anyway).

Shiny Preview: Dynamax Gyroscope

I adore it when Zara finds fitness gadgets to film - I always finish watching the video thinking that that particular product is definitely the one to end my regime of non excercise. This one is no exception - not only does it involve centrifugal force (see below) it has flashing lights. Is it a disco? Is it a workout? Who knows, but it looks awesome.

MSI_Wind_NetOn-2_w300.jpg2009 marks the year MSI plans to convert those world dominating ambitions into an actuality, by attempting to take a lead in the all-in-one PC market with its Wind NetOn models. Before the doors opened at CES this year, we already knew they were planning to impress with a range of netbooks and notebooks. What we didn't know, was that it'd be unleashing an all-in-one touchscreen PC (think HP TouchSmart and Eee Top).

Press release spiel says the Wind NetOn is a "killer product", coming in 16, 19 and 22-inch offerings - I say, it's not quite "killer" (as we've seen models like this before), but it is a super thin and aesthetically pleasing, wall-hanging PC, with the ability to command at your fingertips.

3d_tv.jpgDo you remember when we commemorated our 1000th Shiny Shiny/Tech Digest video with a hypothetical look into the future? Susi had the iPhone, Dan glimpsed into the future of cameras with the Canon IXUS 12,000 camera with a 360 degree lens cameras, and Zara had a look into the future of the Xbox with the Xbox 3600 with Halo 30. I, on the other hand explored the world of the virtual sex toy.

Staying within the realms of virtual sex is the news that 3D porn will be taking the world by storm this year, meaning the word 'fantasy' is set to take on an entirely new meaning. No longer will you need to envisage what's going on in the ole' imagination - it'll quite literally be in front of you. Although, much like a lap dance, you won't be able to touch - looking is the only offer on the menu.

iHome_iH15.colors_HR_610x683.jpgSomewhere in the middle of the Consumer Electronics Show stood the iHome stand and its translucent iH15 LED Colour Changing iPod Stereo in all its multicoloured splendour. At the touch of a button you're treated to a chameleon-esque techni-coloured light show, customised by you, while you chillax to a bit of Kings of Leon. The specs say it features four colour settings - the picture suggests otherwise - so this particular detail is a bit vague. What is clear however, is there will be some colour alternation action going down.

Accompanying the light show, are Reson8 stereo speakers with passive subwoofer and a line-in jack for MP3 players and the like.

CES 2009: NJOY ecigarettes

Zara managed to track down the only manufacturer of e-cigarettes here in the US, NJOY. And there's more than just cigarettes - there are styles that will make you look (kind of) like Audrey Hepburn, and another that will make you look like Groucho Marx. What fun.

So geekeroons, it's that time of year again, when thousands upon thousands of tech lovers descend upon somewhere big enough to house all the gadgets that'll be making their debut in '09. Well, the need for speculation and crystal ball gazing is no more.

We'll keep adding the latest gadgets to the top of the list, so keep coming back for the latest in the world of consumer electronics and see if you can predict which ones will be the biggest of 2009.

CES 2009: Mu-bot headphones

Back in 2006 we brought these headphones to your attention, but I can now reveal they're going to hit the USA mass market this spring and move away from their niche resting place in Japan. They're basically headphones attached to a white plastic body, and before you think 'aww how cute', they're actually pretty frustrating to use. I took a picture of myself wearing them to illustrate just how chunky they are, and the effect is seriously unsubtle.

CES 2009: Skullcandy Pipe iPod Dock and Speakers

We love Skullcandy 'phones here at Shiny, but did you know they also do their own line of audio speakers? This multicoloured barrel is lovingly described as an 'audio bazooka', and the paint job ain't bad either.

Naturally it's fully iPod compatible, and also charges the devices whilst they play. You get an included remote control, which is handy as the Pipe doesn't actually have very many buttons,(only two!) minimalist chic at its best.

CES 2009: iPanda and iGhost from Speakal

The iPanda is basically an updated but slightly cuter (in my opinion) version of the iPig we raved about earlier this year. It incorporates the exact same specs,as both have 25 watts of sound,a cutesy case and a mouth that lights up when it's happy/turned on. The iPanda is iPod compatible and plays sound in 360 degrees, due to its its unique 5 speaker design.

What I am excited about though is the yet unnamed iGhost which looks like a character from Space Invaders and was displayed on the Speakal stand.

Beauty has always been big business, but when it melds with tech we always seem to get something extra special. Everyone's favourite fantasy figure has released a home nail studio kit that's actually rather cool. Aimed at the youth 'girly' market (well it's in pastel pink) the digital nail printer falls into the Beautronics sector. This pink printer hooks up to your PC and gives you the option of printing custom designs straight onto your nails. Yes, STRAIGHT onto them.

CES 2009: F.A.M.P.S are the sweetest RFID's around

You thought the Nabaztag rabbit was as cute as RFID readers were ever going to get? Well you were wrong my friends, oh so wrong. Mattel has released details of a selection of glorious South Park like figurines that trump that bunny cuteness any day of the week. The F.A.M.P.S (which stands for (Feelings, Attitudes, Moods and Personalities) are collectible figures which connect to Macs or PCs via USB or an RFID reader. Each figure allows you to personalize your desktop and add colour and different background to your online presence.

GiiNii.jpg
It's easy to leave CES feeling jaded, cynical and knackered. It's products like the MoveIt Mini, from GiiNii, though, that make it all worth while. We might be slightly hysterical from lack of sleep and too much roulette, but we think it's awesome.

On the face of it, it's a WiFi enabled media player. With rubbish memory - just 256MB onboard. However, look under the hood and you'll find a MicroSD slot, so you can expand it to your hearts content. And even better, you'll find Android.

CES 2009: Sony P Series

Comments (0)

The Sony P Series has been met with a fair amount of skepticism here at CES - can it justify the £850 price tag in a world of cheap as chips netbooks? I got some time with it this afternoon, and I have to say, if nothing else, the build quality trumps any netbook I've ever seen, and there are a couple of nice features that push it from netbook to 'Lifestyle PC'.

Now I love my gadgets. My phone is my prized possession and when on occasion it has fallen into the toilet it has plummeted me to the depths of despair. The idea of voluntarily submerging items of tech, seems far fetched but Seal Shield has made it a reality with their line of dishwasher friendly mice, keyboards and remote controls.

No longer do you need to put up with sticky germ infested pieces of electronics as you can just rinse and go to bring them back to a storefront shine. If you're still unconvinced, all devices come with a three year warranty, and are 100%waterproof guaranteed.
