CES 2007: Rhinestones, rhinestones everywhere

cosam2-thumb.jpg
There's not a shortage of girly stuff here at CES, and it seems we're rubbing off on the boys over at Tech Digest. They found these rather lovely/hideous rhinestones which you can peel off and stick on every piece of technology your heart desires. I love them/hate them and want to spend the rest of my night decorating my phone/want to throw them out the window. As you can see, I'm undecided.

slingcatcher-1.jpg
Slingboxes 'sling' TV to your laptop for when you're out and about. The new SlingCatcher does the opposite - 'slinging' content from your computer to your TV - ideal for downloaded films and suchlike. It'll also allow you to view any website on your TV. There's even the functionality to view content on any TV in the house using the Slingcatcher, so you can easily watch a DVD or recorded programmes anywhere.

There is an optional hard disc you can purchase, which is planned to allow you to buy content from Sling Media and store it. No partners have been announced yet, but watch this space. This is all due to launch midway through the year, for about $200.

CES 2007: exercising and gaming, for real

Another game that claims to get you fit, but this time does actually include some kind of getting fit making device. This PCGamerBike hooks up to your console, and whenever you pedal whatever you are - car, person or other - moves along.

CES 2007: Video of Philips' AmBX ambi video gaming system

Ignore Susi's distraction with the computer game, and focus on the shiny piece of kit from Philips she's touting as the next Big Thing in PC gaming. Look! It has colourful lights! And a rumble pack! Subwoofers, fans, and a whole host of other features. Watch the video below to see pretty lights, or take a look at yesterday's post where the details are explained in full.

If you're not up for the USB guitar, perhaps you'd like a guitar with Betty Boop's mug plastered all over it. The jury's still out on this one, but apparently it's ideal for those that need an extra push to get into the music scene. They've also brought out a Jack Daniel's version, which you can read all about over at Tech Digest if you like your guitars 80% proof. Apparently Peavey, the manufacturers, are well-known for producing top quality guitars, something I will admit to knowing nothing about. Thank god for Google.

simpsons.jpgMany thanks to the fab Stuart Miles from PocketLint, who hopefully won't mind much that we've nicked his photo of this groovy Simpsons mobile from Samsung. Made in time for The Simpsons movie, it's a rather-edible looking yellow, and has an even more delectable pink donut phone charm hanging off it, just to add a further 3.6 seconds of extra fumbling when searching for it in the dirty depths of your handbag. Or, in this case, when juggling 3 of the orignal glazed Krispy Kreme donuts we've been indulging in here at CES. It apparently comes loaded with film content, which we're guessing is perhaps a trailer for the forthcoming movie jizz.

hd-vs-bluray.jpg
It's a real battle of the formats here at CES, with HD-DVD and Blu-ray wrestling / rockpaperscissors / monopoly matches on the hour, every hour to declare the winner here at CES. Well, not quite, but it should happen like that.

Today though, the Blu-ray association released a statement and "declared its victory as the premiere high definition DVD format of choice". Interesting, bearing in mind that more HD-DVD units have been sold than Blu-ray (partly because they were first out there, though).

Blu-ray attribute their 'victory' on the PS3 being able to play their discs, but HD-DVD also have a few things to crow about.

CES 2007: the USB guitar

iaxe393-thumb.jpg
Even rock stars like to cut out the middle man sometimes. The iAXE393 lets you record directly to your hard drive without any fiddly kit in between the two, and also lets you jam with your own MP3 tracks of Rachel Stevens AC/DC. Sadly, no Take That, Girls Aloud or Coldplay come included. Wonder why?

Software is included to record multi-track rawk ballads and edit them to sound professional (i.e. like Slash, rather than like a hamfisted amateur), and there's a built-in headphone port so you don't wake the neighbours with your solos. Oh, and you can use it as a regular guitar too, by connecting it to an amp.

The iAXE393 is out in the US and costs around $99, but apparently sells around the world, with us Europeans particularly keen. If Jimi Hendrix was part of the iPod generation, he would've owned one. Although hopefully he wouldn't have set fire to it.

Not only is she the shiny with the best grasp of gonzo journalism, Kat also happens to be a gamer girl in disguise, which explains why she got all excited at the sight of the 3 foot Mario model on the stand packed with Nintendo accessories. Not sure how to carry your Wii yet? Look no further...

CES 2007: Sony Vaio madness

vaio1.jpg
A big theme at CES this year seems to be for amazing looking new laptops, notebooks and PCs. It's not enough that they have amazing specs any more, to find their way onto a display (and into our homes) they have to look amazing too. Bill Gates showed us some of the best-looking Vista compatible PCs at his keynote speech, and Sony's stand was pure laptop porn, so to speak, with every Vaio notebook worth mentioning displayed on a central pillar with lots of flattering lighting (we want that for our videos, please). From a 007 themed notebook in a James Bond suitcase to the C series Vaio's with their patterned covers, we couldn't resist some gratuitious snaps...

Yesterday we told you about Sharp's willy-waving exploits with the launch of their ridiculous 108" LCD tv screen (think of it as half a cinema in your own home, for the cost of a small-budget brit flick). Now for some perspective, here's Shiny's answer to Hunter S. Thompson giving you a look at the screen as it's being shown here at CES. She's not with us, honest...

I knew one day having a pet hamster would pay off, and now is the time. Now my little fluffball can start putting into practice that plan for world domination I know she's been concocting all along (she may be cute but she's also very manipulative). iRobot, the folks behind the Roomba robot vacuum recently launched a programmable robot called the iCreate for those wishing to customise their bots. This is the result of one person's dream. Hammie goes in her (or his) ball, the ball fastens on top of the bot and voila, a hamster-powered robot. It doesn't do much but it's fun to watch!

I'm surrounded by the best in new technology, from 108" LCD screens to amazing new computers with cylindrical towers. So why is it that I get drawn to the novelty USB flash drives? Pretec have it all in their i-Disk range, from the notorious Sushi USBs (i-Disk Sushi in 512mb and 1gb capacity) to the blingtastic i-Disk Vogue diamante studded dog-tag style USB necklaces (in 1gb and 2gb capacity). I couldn't resist snapping the tacky-fabulous displays. Next thing you know, I'll actually be wearing one...

What's your home telephone been missing all this time? Why, a built-in pot pourri holder, of course, for that fresh phone smell every time your mom rings you. Hmmm.

CES 2007: Kinyo's IR hairdryer

True to form, we were distracted by the hairdryer at the Kinyo stand. It uses IR, so less energy, as well as helping your hair stay healthy. And it reduces the electromagnetic field energy, which is apparently a good thing.

CES 2007: Shadowrun on Xbox 360 and Windows Vista

CES 2007: Boynq girlified computer peripherals

Boynq were the first girlcentric stand we stumbled across today, and they feature all sorts of peripherals, including card readers, speakers and webcams, all with a look you won't want to hide behind the empty coffee mugs on your desk. Check them out here.

CES 2007: R2D2 mobile entertainment system

Star Wars fans, prepare to wet your lady knickers. This is one serious piece of kit. A complete mobile entertainment system in the form of an R2D2 robot, this baby will play radio, CD, MP3, WMA and most other music formats, project DVDs, games and photos onto your wall or ceiling and move around the floor whilst doing so...

gates.jpgYesterday at his keynote speech Bill Gates mentioned how much he loves to walk around the halls to find out who made the biggest LCD screens each year. "You? Walk the halls? Like a normal person?" we thought. Never going to happen! So imagine our surprise when the big G appeared to be doing just that this morning. Ok, he was at the Microsoft stand, but we expect he'll be popping over to Sharp to take a gander at that 108" monster. before the day is up. Our early morning camera skills obviously aren't up to much, so you're going to have to trust that that's him on the right, the fuzzy blur with the coffee cup and stylish headgear. He looks about as good as we do right now. Obviously that speech tired him out too.

CES 2007: Day one of the show

vegasg.jpgHardcore CES-ers are now two days in, but today is the first day that the exhibition is open to the masses, and all but one of our Shiny team are now off search of the most weird and wonderful stuff we've yet to report on. You'll be hearing a lot from me today as I hold the fort in the press room, bringing you news, pictures, video and (I promise) no more posts as long as that Bill Gates one.

Viva Las Vegas!
