jbl.jpgAnother goody we saw at CES but must've missed, inbetween all that pink Taser-ing and Mini Washer-ing we did over there, JBL unveiled their On Air Control 2.4G wireless speaker system. Being wireless, it's perfect for a clutter-free area, whether being used with your home theatre, iPod, computer, or even the ol' cassette player, and includes a pair of wall-mountable loudspeakers with the wireless transceiver and amplifier, plus a transmitter/receiver module and remote control. It's being churned out in your nearest JBL retailer from February this year, for around $349.

Shiny Video: Pioneer new GPS system

I was just mulling over what we saw at CES, and realised that I didn't ever actually show you this new GPS system from Pioneer. It's currently just one for the US at the moment, but we'll keep you posted on any plans to bring it to the UK.

CES 2007: The Debrief

It's over and we're back. Or at least we are in body - our minds are still hovering somewhere over the Atlantic. But boy did we do Vegas. There were 142 posts over the show, so you'd be excused for missing the odd one or two. So, here's a round-up of the really important bits:

Best video: The Giddyup horse, courtesy of Stuart from Tech Digest. What's not to love - there's the initial enjoyment in his face, followed by the slightly uncomfortable grimace as he realises everyone's looking at him, followed by some nonchalent fiddling with the controls. Video gold.

Runner up: We're Shiny Shiny. Of course it was going to be Hello Kitty.

Nokia has introduced a new member of the Nseries. The N76 is a slimline - and rather delectable - flip phone.

Not only does it have cover buttons (for you to access important functions without opening it), but it can hold up to 1500 tracks and has a headphone socket. Choose from metallic pink or black (or buy both).

If you are not already salivating, this video preview ought to do the trick. (Check out the video after the turn to see the phone in action)

CES 2007: top 10 (final edition)

So it's over. The geeks have left town, and there's nowt to do in Vegas but drink and gamble.

Time, then, for us to show you the top 10 videos you've liked the most - the little things we filmed that our counters tell us were most popular with you, the readers. Not only are you everyone's person of the year, but you contributed to Shiny Shiny in your own special way. I hope that makes you feel good.

1. Asimo. Nuff said.

2. Feeling fat? Want exercise, but don't want to stop playing video games? Put down that Wii and get on your bike. Not that one, silly, the one that plugs into your game. Drive that car with your thighs of steel mush that will soon become steel. Unless you get bored and go back to killing hookers on GTA.

CES 2007: Wii-like remote control

Comments (2)

I have a tendency to get very over-excited about things that probably don't warrant quite so much excitement. See my declaration that the new version of Philips Ambilight might change the world if you need confirmation of that. But this is exciting, I promise. And developed by a lovely lady, natch.

It's a remote control which can control all your media, thanks to their software. And it's operatable simply by moving your wrist. Thanks to its gyroscopic capabilities you don't even need to point it at the television, since it 'just knows' when you're moving. It's due to be integrated into televisions in late 2007, where it will appear under the brand of the television manufacturers. And the best bit? It looks like a bracelet.

The dust is settling, and we thought we'd take this time to thank the people who cared. Really cared. Cared enough to give us stuff to make our job easier. And for that reason alone, we love 'em. Without further ado, we'd like to give big hugs professional handshakes to Sandisk, BB Shopping, Sony, Medion, Kodak, OnShare and Skype. Why? Read on, my friends...

We've shown you some video, but not really told you much about the new product from Sandisk premiering at CES. As well as new ultra-thin memory sticks for Sony Ericsson phones, a compact USB music player and sleek new 2gb+ flash drives (pictured), there are two products worth a special mention.

Sansa Connect is a 4gb MP3 player with Wi-Fi capability, allowing you to connect to music and photos from any internet hotspot. The device - set to hit the US market in March for $249.99 - will contain 'community features' via the internet for recommending new music and photos, and also comes with a micro SD slot.

CES 2007: Jobs is a DJ - the Belkin Tunestage

BelkinTuneStudio_hiRes-thumb.jpg
If you fancy yourself as a bit of a music producer (producers are the new drummers in the world of music), check out the Belkin Tunestage. It's a four channel audio mixer, which lets you record straight to your iPod, so you can amaze and delight people with your music prowess, without all the faffing around. It's also a pretty rugged design, and Belkin reckon it is "tough enough to withstand life in a rehearsal room or in a garage", although I thought the garage scene died with bleached and ripped up jeans. Read on for the really serious musical stuff.

CES: 10 latest videos

Comments (2)

Another day, another silly gadget or ten brought to you by our intrepid journalists. Here are the ten latest videos we shot at CES, assembled for your viewing pleasure.

1. Best. Video. Ever. Not only will the Giddyup Horse Simulator make you laugh lose weight, but you can get some uncomfortable jollies watching Stuart do his thang in a strangely sexual fashion.

2. I hate everyone who lives in Japan. Not only do they get to live in my favourite country, eating the best food in the world, but they also have Akihabara and futuristic gadgets we'll never see. These 10 megapixel cameraphones are a case in point. [And we also hate Korea, since that's where Samsung is actually from. And when we say hate, we mean jealous. Obviously].

toshiba.jpgMicrosoft has been spreading its love around a lot recently, as we saw at the Bill Gates keynotes speech on Saturday night, and one of the lucky punters has been Toshiba. They’ve joined together, made sweet, sweet love, and created the signature Windows Vista PC, with a birth certificate labelling it the Portégé R400. Funny name for a baby, that. We got our hands on it today, and were quite impressed with the features it has, predominantly the ability to view email and calendar dates using Toshiba’s Edge Display. Without lifting the lid of the notebook, just by glancing at the edge of the lid, you can see exactly how many emails you have, who sent them, and what the subjects are, regardless of whether the computer is on or off.

There's no way we could possibly introduce this video better than Stu did over at Tech Digest, so we didn't bother...

Look, I'm a bit confused by this gadget, so I'll just quote the text on the sign next to it in full: "Personal private washing machine for ladies. For your beloved babies. For your beloved pets. For students."

I can't imagine you can actually put a baby in there, so I assume that means baby clothes and/or nappies. But pets? A chihuahua might fit, but I don't fancy your chances of squeezing a doberman in. Or a student. Still, it's made by Technosonic, and comes in blue/white or yellow/white versions. See it in action below.

They really will make anything pink in order to flog it to ladies, won't they? Music players, phones, even laptops we can understand. But who decided to make a pink Taser gun?

No, we're not joking. The Taser C2 really does come in a metallic pink edition, as well as the more manly black pearl, electric blue and titanium silver versions. The device has a range of 15 feet, can last for up to 50 firings before needing a recharge, comes with an optional laser sight, and requires a background check before you're allowed to buy one, so you don't use it to hold up your local supermarket (obviously girls with pink ones will find it much more handy for giving lechy men a bit of a shock*).

*that's officially my worst pun ever.

sennheiser.jpgWhilst on the plane over to Vegas, I asked the other four Shiny members what headphones they’d recommend I purchase, and they all threw about 3 models at me each. Needless to say, I haven’t bought any yet, simply because I’m so confused over the matter, every brand touts theirs as being the best, most innovative, or noise-cancelling on the market. So when a company like Sennheiser releases new headphones named NoiseGard, you pretty much know what to expect. The NoiseGard PXC 450 has a new feature for Sennheiser, TalkThrough, which reduces ambient noise from around you, yet still allows you to talk to your neighbour without taking the ‘phones off your ears. Tiny microphones in the headphones pick up on a surrounding noise, determine what form of noise it is, and treats it accordingly. Unfortunately they’re going to be pretty pricey when launched in March, at $499.95, but due to that feature alone, they’re bound to be popular with travellers and gadget-enthusiasts alike.

mojo.jpgWhilst passing through the stalls at CES, I passed a rather gaudy looking booth which quite frankly looked like some of the shops at the dodgy end of London's Oxford Street - you know the type, the electronics-version of your local kebab shop. However, sometimes those shops have little diamonds in the rough, and so did this stand. I stumbled across some rather nifty speakers for your MP3/iPod from the Gifts At Princess booth. Called the ‘Light Show’ speaker system, there’s several different styles, the ‘Duet’, ‘Twin Spin’, or ‘Matrix Cubes’. They connect to any music source with a line out (headphone jack), and display visuals similar to that of a Mathmos product, or Windows Media Player visuals. Perfect for entertaining a ‘guest’ in your bedroom, the prices are not confirmed yet, however will more than compensate for the ‘discussions’ you and your ‘guest’ will ‘share’. [Kat]

CES 2007: Warner Brothers bring us dual HD discs

hdtvbluray.png
Tea or coffee? Ben or Jerry? The Beatles or the Rolling Stones? Don't even answer, because you no longer need to choose. The world is accepting us in all our shapes and sizes, yes, even HD-DVD and Bluray. And yes, I know this is the 97th post about HD, but quite frankly, if you'd been to CES, you'd understand why. It's freakin' everywhere.

Warner Brothers has produced the Dual Disc, which can hold both Bluray and HD-DVD formats, so no matter what player you plumped for, if all discs come in this, you won't have a problem. It won't at this point come with a plain old DVD layer, but give them time, as they're working on it.

So, do you get a dual player? Or do you make a decision and then hope everything gets made as a Dual Disc? Turns out, there's more decisions than ever. Grrr.

casio.jpgAs time goes by, things get smaller and smaller - just look at Nicole Richie or Gordon Ramsay’s latest restaurant’s portion sizes for reference. So, it’s only fair that Casio would launch the world’s slimmest digital camera (with a 7x optical zoom lens). Let me reiterate - it’s not the world’s thinnest camera, it’s the world’s thinnest, with a 7x optical zoom lens. Sorry I made you wet your pants in anticipation there! The Exilim Hi-Zoom EX-V7 features 7.2 mega pixels, four blur reduction technologies, including the new CCD shift system that compensates for camera shake, the newly designed Exilim Engine 2.0 image processor, and a whole bevy of other beauties. It’s going to available to us mere mortals in March, for the RRP of $399. I tell you, this is one camera which may make me discard my only 6-month old Exilim Card. [Kat]

built.jpgAccording to Built NY, they’ve just released a line of laptop sleeves and accessories made out of a durable, stretchy wetsuit neoprene material, called ‘Electic’. I had the chance to eyeball some of their funky designs, like the Laptop Portfolio Case, Charger bag (to throw all those numerous cables into), the Electric Pocket (to fit digital cameras, PDAs, mobiles, and the ubiquitous iPod), and of course, the humble Laptop Sleeve. You’ve got a choice of navy blue, green, black, brown, or my favourite, ’stripe’, which is a very Shiny Shiny suitable collection of colours. [Kat]

Kat's at the Toshiba stand (sans her usual Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas costume, sadly) to check out the Portégé R400 notebook / tablet PC. It's one of the vista-ready models that flashed up on the screens during Bill Gates keynote speech...but do we like it as much as Microsoft?

Somewhere in between the many phones, monster tv screens, mp3 players and other proper techie stuff, there was a stand full of crazy pink Hello Kitty fabulousness. Needless to say, we found it and felt the urge to shoot some over-excited video about pink DVD players, radios and oversized USB sticks. Enjoy...
