FredFlare.com describe this as a "sleepy dog". Now, to me it looks more like a dead dog, but I guess that could just be because I haven't had enough caffeine yet today. Either way, it's most definitely a dog, and it's a lot more interesting than most of the wrist rests we see littering desktops across the land. It's just $16, and, as well as helping creating the impression that a dog crawled onto your desk and died/fell asleep, it'll also help support your wrists while you work. And it has a heart on its butt.

I try to see the good in gadgets, I really do, but sometimes you’ve just got to wonder what gets into people’s heads when they design things. Look at this ridiculous round and decidedly non-QWERTY keyboard. Just look at it! Can you imagine typing on it?

Believe it or not, it is actually designed with functionality in mind – just not typing functionality. Gaming functionality. Now I’m not a gamer myself, so correct me if I’m wrong here, but I understood gaming had moved on from the days of pressing A for left and CTRL to shoot. But this keyboard places the directional keys – that’s W, A, S, and D for those who don’t remember the ’80s – in the middle, and the ‘fire’ button – CTRL of course – near the pinky. This idea may have had marginal virtue a very long gaming time ago but don’t we have ergonomically perfected handsets for our first-person shooters these days?

I know we'd all like to think that warm days are just around the corner, but for those of us who live in the UK, we just have to face the reality that they might not be. Enter the heated keyboard, which surprisingly enough, is exactly what it sounds like - a keyboard that's heated. I had visions of burning my poor little fingers on the keys of this, but apparently it just heats up to "normal hand temperature", to help improve your circulation and stop you developing frostbite on those cold winter mornings in the office. It'll make a nice companion for your heated mice, too.

Excuse me a second while I just get my sunglasses. Right! Here we are with the, err, lovely Hello Kitty USB keyboard. Designed with Kitty, umm, style in mind, it incorporates all the colours of the Kit herself, and I mean ALL the colours. You won’t miss the hotkeys, because they’re bright pink, and there’s no mistaking the shining blue number keys either! All this key-fashion with an ergonomic, pink and blue tartan wrist rest to complete the picture makes this the most, ahem, startling keyboard that’s crossed my path in a while.

There's just no end to the fun you can have with a keyboard these days. It used to be that you'd only ever use one for boring old inputting - now they're your flexible friend, too, and you can roll them up, twist them around and... well, I think that's pretty much it, but come on, it's a keyboard for God's sake, what more do you want? This one is waterproof and dust proof (so no more toast crumbs behind the keys), and is silent, according to the blurb. It's also blue (or pink, white or black if you prefer).

Why is it that everything old looks so nice and classy? Will my square, black laptop one day be sought after as ‘retro’? Is it that design was genuinely more stylish then? Have we now used up all the good ideas there are and need to recycle them? Or do we just hanker after a time when things were simpler? Whatever it is, there is definitely something stylish in old-fashioned typewriters, which modern day keyboards do not possess. Not generally, that is.

“Noooooo!” cries my instinct as I catch sight of this photo, the mistaken hands doing the unthinkable, “You can’t dunk a keyboard in water! Stooooooop!”

But it’s okay. I can relax. This is a Unotron keyboard with SpillSeal patented technology. It can be wiped, rinsed, soaped, disinfected and yes, even dunked in a sink full of water. It’s marketed at those who work in healthcare and education, where cleanliness is a bit more of an issue than in my office, but I imagine it’s good for clean freaks, too.

Also available is a mouse, and they come in corded or wireless versions.

Keyboards and mice get pretty disgusting. That is, we know they get disgusting, but because they don't look all that bad, we tend to let it slide to the point where they're literally laden with more bacteria than the lavatory seat. Unotron offers an alternative: SpillSeal keyboards and mice that can be washed in normal (or antibacterial) soap and water whenever you like. Available in wired or wireless models, starting at $30. Is it deja vu? Haven't we already told you about the Eleksen Fabric Keyboard? Yes, we have, but Eleksen wasn't done with it. It still rolls up and is made of fabric, but the new double-sided version has a QWERTY keyboard on one side and on the other side features a calculator plus media controls. Type, control your music player, do your sums, or launch a space shuttle. Okay, I made that last one up, obviously, but I'm sceptical about this gadget.

I think I must be an innately violent person, even though I never perpetuate acts of violence, even on flies and spiders. See, my first thought upon seeing this flexible fabric keyboard wasn't 'how convenient/transportable/better for typing'. Oh no. My first thought was 'finally! A keyboard I can hit people with and not have to worry about GBH charges.' Not that I've ever even thought about hitting people with keyboards before.

But anyway. It's a keyboard, it works via Bluetooth (and 2 AAA batteries) and therefore will type for any Bluetooth-enabled device where typing is relevant, and is pressure sensitive. The fabric itself is durable, and the nice people who make it even give you a sexy nylon bag to keep it in. Lucky you!

3-IN-1-FROG-KIT-unit.gifI'm quite fond of frogs. Not fond enough to actually want froggy speakers and a keyboard - what, may I ask, is wrong with simplicity in computer peripherals? - but fond enough to find these amusing and worthy of pointing out.

In addition to being cute and green, the set plugs in using your traditional keyboard and mouse ports, so will be a doddle to use. I hop you like it.

Keyboard_trainers Here's something to coordinate with your computer key ring, a pair of keyboard trainers.  According to iSPY2, these shoes have taken first place in the sports category in the 6th Hong Kong Footwear Design Contest.  They're a little chunky for my tastes; but if these kicks were functional bluetooth keyboards, there'd be a pair or two in my closet for sure.- [Star C. Ring_2 As often as computer technology is upgraded and outmoded, it's no wonder artists have started cannibalising parts of old machines to be put to new uses.   Theses Azerty Objects rings aren't likely to raise any "oohs" and "ahhs" from Ladies Who Lunch, but they just might illicit an envious look or two  from your favourite Contessas Who Code (yeah, I know it isn't a real aphorism, but it so should be). - [Star C.
