georgia-head-shot-.jpgThis is a sponsored post in conjunction with HP and The Fox Problem.

Our competition with HP and The Fox Problem has just ended, ahead of a final party with The Fox Problem girls and loads of awesome music in London this evening.

To celebrate the end of the latest season of The Fox Problem, powered by HP, we caught up with presenter and brainchild of the show, Georgia LA.

Hi Georgia! So tell us, what's The Fox Problem got to do with tech?

Everything! We couldn't do our Skype head interviews without HP's Split x2 laptops, and the HP Envy 23 Recline is integral for Twitter hosts, like Example and Fazer, to be able to do their thing!

Tell us about your role on The Fox Problem and how it all came about?

Well, I'm both a presenter and producer of the show! My friends Gemma Cairney, Georgie Okell and I came up with the idea for The Fox Problem. We made some ridiculous powerpoint presentations using daisies as bullet points and tried to pimp it out to whoever would listen to us.
Luckily for us, social media production company Telegraph Hill believed in it! We did the whole first series on a shoestring above a pub, and HP somehow believed in our madness too!

Wow, very inspiring! Give us a rundown of your video career to date.

Well I won the LG Media Talent Award when I was 18 and interned at ShinyShiny.tv actually! I did loads of internships after that while I was at uni studying journalism, the big one being SBTV where I became the first lady in the team of under 25's responsible for the lifestyle outputs of the channel, interviewing everyone from Richard Branson to Justin Bieber!

That led to doing proper telly for Virgin Media, all of their music reporting and interviews and frantically pitching The Fox Problem! I hosted Vevo's festival and red carpet coverage last year, I was the official music reporter for the Brits online and now I'm obviously working on The Fox Problem!

What area of tech most excites you?

I think self-charging phone batteries are quite exciting. I read The New Digital Age and the projections of what our future is going to be like in that just blew my mind - from superficial stuff, like holographic videos instead of photos in your living room, to how tech is seriously going to help developing countries.

Oh and the Leap Motion technology in the HP Envy 17 laptop is amazing, being able to control stuff with body movement is just sweeet.

What's your must-have piece of tech day-to-day? Your OMG-I-just-can't-live-without gadget?

Hmmm probs my HP computer - I try and touch the screen of any other ones I use then remember they can't do it!

So do you have a piece of tech that needs fox-ing up?

Ermm I actually can't think of one... my brain maybe?!

Approved Fox Problem shot-inpost22.jpgThis is a sponsored post in conjunction with HP and The Fox Problem.

As the final episode of The Fox Problem draws to a close, we've hooked-up with HP - powering the tech behind the show - for the chance to win your very own Slate 10 HD.

To win, we want you to show us how much you need to Fox up Your Tech. Does your hi-fi look like something from a boy's bedroom in the 1980s - but in a very bad way! Or is your PC so old it still uses floppy disks? Then now is your chance to grab something a bit more, ahem, modern. From PC's to TVs, snap yourself with your dated piece of kit and tell us why you deserve an upgrade.

The second series of The Fox Problem hosted by Gemma Cairney (Radio 1), Georgia LA (VEVO) and Georgie Okell (Fuse TV), goes out with a bang this evening with celeb guests including Richard E. Grant, Daisy Lowe and Gabrielle.

With technology at the heart of The Fox Problem, the show is broadcast live to YouTube fortnightly on Tuesdays at 7:30pm and powered by HP, which shares the same passion for enabling the next generation to create, consume and engage in new ways. The show uses the latest, most innovative HP technology and sleek devices such as the HP Split X2, the HP ENVY17, the world's first notebook with integrated Leap Motion gesture control technology and HP's Android Slates; bringing cutting edge entertainment and technology together from underneath an old railway arch in the centre of Shoreditch.

We have six HP Slate 10 HDs to give away as part of our Fox up Your Tech competition with HP and The Fox Problem, alongside six pairs of tickets to an exclusive acoustic night hosted by The Fox Problem in London on Tuesday 8th April 2014.

For your chance to Fox up Your Tech just snap a photo of you and your old piece of tech, tell us why it needs fox-ing up and send your photos to Shiny Shiny's editor via email: becca@sutrodigital.com.

We'll pick six winners at 5pm on Friday 4th April 2014, so get snapping that old tech!

Good Luck! And if you don't win, you can still tune into tonight's final live show at 7:30pm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxE8mcI44mk

Or catch-up on the entire series instead via: www.youtube.com/user/TheFoxProblem

Emma Kenny from Hull was the lucky winner of our competition for a TokyoFlash Kisai Console watch - a entrancingly weird emerald and matte black steel creation in the fine tradition of TokyoFlash. Based on the design of a old-style games console it doesn't tell the time in a obvious way, but will let you work it out if you sit down and look at it long enough.

Emma correctly answered the question: Which TokyoFlash watch is named after the Japanese word for two? Answer: The Ni

Thanks Emma, The Kisai Console watch should be winging its way towards you soon. Make sure you don't lose the instruction manual though, these things are hard to tell the time on.

Everyone else: TokyoFlash emailled us yesterday to say that the proceeds from any watches bought before tomorrow will go to Japanese earthquake relief - see more here. If you want to help and get a great timepiece in the bargain, now's the time to buy one.

Look out for more competitions in future - we're likely to be working with TokyoFlash again.

WIN A CONSOLE WATCH WITH TOKYOFLASH

ShinyShiny have teamed up with TokyoFlash to give one lucky reader the chance to win their Console watch (retail value: £113.47)

We're big fans of the crazy watches that Japanese brand TokyoFlash create. They combine high quality engineering with a slightly deranged approach to telling the time that makes their watches about ten times more fun than normal watches.

TokyoFlash often crowdsource watch designs which partly accounts for their unusual look. With a design inspired by games consoles - this is how they describe the Console watch:

"Vivid green lights illuminate three separate screens as you touch the button to activate the display. The system is online and fully operational. It's time to take control of your wrist wear with Kisai Console.

"Precision engineered from high quality stainless steel, Console features three carefully drilled zones, each fitted with a curved, smoked mineral crystal glass lens enabling the light to be clearly diffused within each segment to present the time."

Fancy one? Enter today by answering this question:

Which Tokyoflash watch is named after the Japanese word for 2?

To enter the competition go to ShinyShiny's Facebook page, www.facebook.com/shinyshinyupdates and leave your answer as a comment on the TokyoFlash competition discussion board. One correct answer at random wins a Tokyoflash watch.

(Competition closes on Wednesday 9th March 2011. Only ShinyShiny Facebook page fans will be eligible to win the prize. Winner will be picked at random.)

Keep an eye on www.shinyshiny.tv/competitions and the ShinyShiny Facebook page, for chances to win more prizes in the future!

Last chance to win a LG Optimus Windows 7 phone

The LG Optimus 7 phone, with its unique features and innovative Windows 7 phone operating system, is a gem of a phone. In addition to its Windows 7 technology, it has a fabulous 5.0 megapixel camera with some cool features like intelligent shot and panorama mode, high definition video shooting, voice to text and full compatibility with all your favourite social networking sites.

The phone also has a wonderful augmented reality feature called ScanSearch, which allows you to easily discover what's around you.

We've had fun playing with a LG Optimus 7 phone all December, but now it's time to give six of our lovely readers who have filled out our survey the chance to own one.

The first three lucky readers that will be receiving a phone in the post soon are:

Sponsored post from LG

DSC_0305_2.JPGMy name is Geoff Crawford and I am a freelance photographer. Normally I spend my days snapping pictures with my trusty top-end DSLR camera, and I must admit I rarely use my phone to take pics. It only has a two mega pixel camera and the images I have taken have been very poor.

LG Optimus 7_Final1.jpgThe Shiny Shiny team and LG sent me out with the LG Optimus 7 to take images using its five mega pixel camera and here's the result. The pictures were taken in various locations in London from St Pancras station through to a church yard in the west of the city. I specifically went for pictures where I thought the camera would be pushed to the limits of exposure - the difference between dark and light. I didn't use the flash as I rarely use it on my own camera.

The panorama mode was fun and after a bit of practice I found it easy to use. I also liked the phone's screen. It was great for reviewing images and those images certainly look superb on it. I was a little more wary about how they would look when blown up, but you can be the judge of how successful the camera on the phone has been. I am pretty pleased.

Overall I can see why people use the cameras on their phones a little more now. I wouldn't think twice about using a camera on a phone of this quality.

Anyway - have a look at the images and decide for yourself.

LG Optimus 7_03.jpg

As you may know already during December we are running a competition to give away no fewer than six fabulous LG Optimus smartphones. All you have to do to enter is click here and fill out a quick survey.

So what are you going to win? Here's the lowdown on the innovative new smartphone.

LG recently launched the Optimus 7 E900, their first venture into the Windows Phone 7 ring.

It's a solid touchscreen phone with an easy to use interface. It has a good weight and feels well-built with its back cover constructed from a durable metal. Like other Windows 7 phones, the Optimus has three buttons on the front: Back, Home and Bing search. Unlike some handsets the LG model had proper physical clicking buttons, rather than the touch-sensitive ones, making it just a bit easier to use.

The Optimus 7 has a 3.8-inch WVGA LCD display, with a resolution of 800x480 pixels. In other words there is no blurriness, users can clearly make out detail and the colours are incredibly vivid. Although the phone is fairly large it can still easily fit into your pocket and is good for watching videos and viewing pictures.

The phone also boasts a very efficient and powerful, battery which utilizes LG's own battery algorithm to maximize efficiency. By offering 1500 mAh, the largest battery capacity among WP7 devices, it delivers a reliable and stress-free experience for consumers. It also delivers the best talk and standy time of any Windows Mobiel 7 handset - Talk time: 480 min / Standby: 416 hrs

Due to Microsoft's strict minimum hardware specifications, most of the Windows Phone 7 devices have similar specs including approximately 8GB of memory, a 1GHz processor and at least a 5-megapixel camera. However, the Optimus differentiates itself here by packing 16GB of on-board storage. This is particularly useful for users as Windows Phone 7 does not support external memory cards.

Again all Windows Phone 7 handsets have the same user interface, which we will delve into further in our "everything you need to know about Windows Phone 7" post. However, some of our favourite features include the integration with Xbox Live, Zune music and Office. The phone operates through six hubs: People, Games, Pictures, Music and Video, Market Place and Office. These hubs are some what interactive, for example your avatar in the Games hub will be supplied from your Xbox Live account. To launch a hub you simply flick the screen right to access the next screen. The screens are on a loop making it quick and simple to navigate through. Also on the home screen sit static tiles which you can set up to work as shortcuts to applications.

Windows 7 also has its own dedicated app store called the The Marketplace. The number of apps is growing quickly as many developers already familiar with Window's platform have begun to develop apps for the new phones. Most apps start at 79p..

The Optimus 7 comes pre-loaded with a number of apps including a fun panorama app and the ScanSearch augmented-reality app. The panorama app makes it easy to take snapshots of wide landscapes by lining up five images in a row, and automatically firing off the shutter when each image is aligned. ScanSearch, which is unique to the phone, is an Augmented Reality app that automatically detects any amenities up to a five-mile radius. The results including: restaurants, bars, hotels, public transit and banks, appear as icons, which you can then tap to reveal that specific amenities phone number and exact location.

The Optimus 7 has a 5-megapixel camera and comes with an LED flash, which is always useful if you are trying to take a picture in dimly lit rooms. The camera has a number of other noteworthy features including the automatic 'intelligent shot' which is useful if you want to quickly catch that snapshot. In addition to taking photos, it is also capable of capturing 720p high definition video. Or if you want to get that cinematic feel, you can even capture video in a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Sharing media from the Optimus 7 is made very simple through LG's DLNA sharing feature "Play To." This allows you to transfer your music, photos and video to any other DNLA-equipped device, such as your TV, provided that it is on the same Wi-Fi network.

The LG Optimus 7 is a fast and easy to use phone with a number of great features.

UPDATE: Final weeks for this.. wing answers along to our email address: comps@shinymedia.com[09/03/10]

It has to be said that not everyone 'gets' computers. So it's a good job those more 'IT literate' people are around to help their friends and family with home IT issues! You see, they have to put up with a lot - while they do it all with a happy heart, they all come across 'those' situations that are so odd, confusing or downright funny that they simply HAVE to tell the word about it! Which is where www.wherestheanykey.co.uk comes in.
It's a place to share your IT fail stories.

And that's why we at Shiny Shiny and our competition sponsors Microsoft(c) love them for it. So to salute these unsung heroes of IT, we're offering one lucky Shiny Shiny reader the chance to win a brand new Dell laptop complete with Windows 7 Home Premium.

How to win that PC

To enter is tell us (Twitter style) in less than 140 characters (we won't be too strict if it is a bit over) about your favourite IT fail. You know it could be anything from confusing a CD-ROM drive with a cup holder through to the time you spent an hour wondering why your PC wasn't working when all that was wrong was that you hadn't plugged it
into the electricity mains.

Check out http://www.wherestheanykey.co.uk to get an idea of what you need to be saying and then ping your story to comps@shinymedia.com with Microsoft Shiny Comp in the header.

We'll be wrapping up the competition at the end of March and announcing the winner soon after.
