iPad cases: let the skinning begin...

Comments (1)

So, we finally got the measurements, and case makers have already got busy and there are at least two ranges out already that I've heard of.

The iPad poses an interesting dilemma for the casemakers - smartphones get tight-fitting skins, laptops get bags - what will the half pound, 10" iPad get? Looks like skins are winning so far. Protect that capacitive touchscreen with some tight fitting rubberised plastic or a sleeve or jacket that you can then slip in a rucksack or handbag.

Griffin Technology have already launched a "for iPad" range and as well as "sleeves" and "jumpers" they've also opted for an interesting "passport" style case which opens up like a book to reveal the screen (see full range here; pricing to be confirmed).

I particularly like the black and white check one, though it's by Ralph Lauren so comes with a hefty £38 price tag. Full Wrappers range here.

I'm sure we'll get many more of these..

bb purse violet may.jpg

If you find yourself unable to live without a Blackberry you might want to invest a little in keeping it safe from bumps and bruises, and there's no more luxurious way to do it than with a hand crafted leather purse from Violet May. Not for the faint of heart or the empty of pocket, these chic purses come equipped with individual mantras, a card and coin section and a stunning stingray print finish. ppq bag.jpg
PPQ are known for pushing the boat out when it comes to blending technology with style (remember their to die for Sky boxes of last year?) and their latest creation takes note of the big buzzword in the tech field right now- netbooks. We love them so much here we've even given them their own sub-category in our computer field, and now you can tote yours around in a designer case. They've designed a deep red crocodile print bag for you to use, which features a velvet padded interior and a couple extra pockets for all your paraphernalia. It will cost£40 from Vodafone when you get a netbook on contract.

pratesi_guitar_backpack_mp3.jpg

Whether you're a rocker at heart or not, you can't deny this guitar backpack is pretty damn cool and looks realistic to boot. Perfect for musos who can't bear to be apart from their guitar when going about their everyday activities, this bag will help to give that similar guitar-on-back feeling but erm, with the added benefit of actually being able to carry things in it as well (always a good thing to have in a bag).

What makes a cool bag even cooler (in my opinion anyway), is the included jack for you to connect up your MP3 player - meaning you can roam the streets or lay down in the park with your beats never too far away. The actual bag is made from vegetable-dyed calf leather (lovely) and is available in either black or brown. It's $398 from Forzieri.

Laptop bags are a dime a dozen nowadays, but then along comes one which makes me break out in sweat at its beauty. I'm talking about the Attache, an uber stylish briefcase with seriously funky styling.

I'm talking about a functional yet fashionable bag which is available in a wide variety of colours, from red to green (with my fave being the Azorro blue pictured), that comes in differing sizes to cater from netbooks to notebooks of 8.9-15 inches.

It's made out of synthetic leather so will be hard wearing, and comes with a padded shoulder strap for extra support.

Live Luggage powers that suitcase for you

Hybrid PA Bag b.jpg

I've recently returned from Australia (yes I know, lucky me), and had severe difficulties lugging my over-sized case across the cosmopolitan city of Sydney. OK, six pairs of shoes may have been unnecessary, but that didn't stop my case being seriously heavy and tricky to manoeuvre. Well the Hybrid PA Bag from Live Luggage may be the answer to my woes, as it's a powered assisted suitcase, designed for frequent flyers.

isee-inked.jpg

With all the buzz besieging the new iPod Shuffle and its tiny frame, I thought I'd take the limelight off it for a few minutes by featuring an iPod Nano accessory (not that you could ever forget they make other iPod apparatus). When you bought your new iPod Nano, I bet it took a while to ponder over the colour of choice to accompany you at your desk/when trying to drown someone out/on all future public transport trips, but what about that little issue concerning protection? It may be pretty, but that doesn't mean its vibrant outer shell doesn't need protecting.

Mophie iPhone case.jpgNot only is Mophie's Juice Pack Air an iPhone 3G battery/case, but it's the world's thinnest external iPhone 3G battery/case. That means your battery gets treated to a considerable life boost (no more mad dashes to an AC outlet) and your iPhone won't run the risk of looking like it's been given a makeover, circa 1990.

The power boosting case packs a rechargeable 1,200 mAH lithium polymer battery that (apparently) "virtually doubles the amount of time you have to rock, talk, surf and send messages". And it features a "standby mode" that'll allow you to dictate when you want to make full use of its additional battery life support as opposed to just using it simply as a case. Four helpful little LEDs will indicate how much juice your external battery has left, keeping those dead battery moments to a minimum.

Valentines element case.JPG

As we all know, the iPhone is *very* precious cargo. One drop and all functionality could be ruined forever. So if your girlfriend treasures her iPhone almost as much as she loves you, you might want to think about getting her a super-impact resistant and stylish Element case, in this eye-catchingly conspicuous pearlescent pink, Valentines Day design. If you can get your order in before the 9th February, you're guaranteed international shipping as well as a custom inscription on the lid, for such terms of endearments as cutie pie, snookums and snuggle bunny.

Knomo's new Carnaby range is patent-tastic!

marbella patent.jpg

We're a big fan of stylish laptop bags here at Shiny, and Knomo tend to top our list for merging functionality with style. Their latest Carnaby range is perfect for the tumultuous spring weather, as they come in an array of black and brown patent and leather finishes.

They're designed to look like fashionistas' handbags, and my favourite, the patent Sheya bag (pictured) is supremely roomy, with multiple pockets and places to store all your wires.

Wooden macbook case.jpgMacbook's don't grow on trees, but this wooden slip case did at some point and has now been beautifully crafted and transformed into this wooden encasing for your beloved Apple Macbook. They're not as basic as they look, the wooden slip cases are lined with leather and feature magnetic enclosures to keep your precious equipment safe and prevent it from falling out, smashing into smithereens (not to mention avoiding running the risk of a bunch of strangers watching you weep while crouched down to the floor face palming).

The timber-laden cases are custom crafted by Rainer Spehl for 13 and 15-inch Macbook Pros. There are no specific prices, but I'm sure if you ask nicely and are prepared to part with cash, they'll custom make a case just for you.

samsung-camcorders-thumb-400x311.jpg

It's CES week, so gadgets aplenty are on the agenda, including this latest collection of HD camcorders from Samsung - The HMX-H106, HMX-H105, HMX-H104, and HMX-H100. All camcorders are packed with full HD sensors and a Schneider Kreuznach Varioplan HD lens with Optical Image Stabilization and 10x optical zoom. So, we're looking at a bunch of super superior cameras. But it's the H106 that really steals the spotlight, with its 64GB SSD - a HD camcorder first.

Shootsac hides your camera toting ways

shootsac.jpg

Up until now, DSLR bags have generally been bulky affairs, heavy on the zips, light on the desire to actually be seen carrying one. Shootsac reckon they've hit on the solution though, with their bags with interchangable covers.

Whilst the innards has all the padding and compartments you'd want from a camera bag, the outer looks decidedly... normal. It holds 3-6 lenses, and is ergonomically designed so as not to stress out your poor body with all that weight. Once you've bought the bag itself, you can choose from numerous covers, to personalise it.

The bag costs $179, whilst the covers are $49 each. Well, who said not looking like a photographer was cheap?

knomo_samplesale.jpg

As far as gadgety accessories go, Knomo bags/cases/covers are up there with some of the best. We love them, Samuel L Jackson loves them - the question is do you love them enough to take some time out of your day to head on over to W1 for a sample sale? Put it like this - if you've ever seen a Knomo product on the site and were drooling at the mouth, your jaw dropped to the floor and/or you found yourself thinking about one of its products at really strange times of the day, then I think you need to get a pen and paper and write down this information.

knomo_serra.JPGLook at this woman. She looks so happy with her Knomo Serra wheelie bag. Could it be the quilted design or perhaps it's the practicality of its design and ease of use that has her grinning like the Cheshire cat. That could be you. If you're going to be practical, you may as well do it in style right? And Knomo's selection of bags on wheels look like fab choices. There are three to choose from, but seeing as they're all in black (see other pictures after the jump) it's a little hard to differentiate. But I can tell you what separates each bag from the other. Firstly the Serra bag (pictured above) is ideal for hand luggage and it has waterproof casing so your laptop will be protected should you happen to be wheeling your bag through a bout of torrential rain.

bagtv.JPGWhen fashion and technology collide, we're used to seeing something like the Prada i.e. a mobile phone. The aptly named BagTV is certainly not a mobile and as far as concepts go, this one is definitely out there. At first sight, it's a rather nice handbag - which is actually modelled on a vintage shape from Gucci. Upon further inspection however, located behind a transparent screen, it reveals a lightweight 7-inch flat screen tablet with a DVD and Mpeg player, USB port and SD card slot. So, your bag transforms your bag into a portable TV for plenty of movie action and picture perusal.

I can't imagine you'd be able to watch it while it's on your shoulder (unless you're Mr Fantasic from the Fantastic Four), so I guess it'll be good for you commute, or a great way to keep the kids quiet? And perhaps if you're feeling a tad friendly or particularly vein, you could play a movie, or showcase your narcissistic photo album to whoever happens to gaze upon your bag. And so you're not confined to the limits of the bag, the screen is fully detachable, with its very own stand.

The Conversation Laptop case is great for texters

If you're anything like me, you'll be drowning in more than enough web acronyms than you ever thought possible. In between puzzling statements that start with LOLcats and end with woot, there may be a place for this rather sweet laptop bag. Carry it with you and even when terminology goes over your head people will think you're just being coy. And if you have a sneaky second you can check the terminology cheat sheet that comes with it. Ttyl!
