Origami goes hi-tech with this new Bluetooth enabled smart lamp which looks like a cross between a slinky and a fan. Called appropriately enough the Orilamp, it’s currently crowdfunding on Indiegogo where, at the time of writing, it has reached $20,000 of its $50,000 target.

I rather like it and think it would make a rather nice, unusual gift. Weighing just 340 grammes, it can easily be popped in your bag for trips away and could serve as a handy night light too, perhaps for kids who are a bit scared of the dark!

As soon as you open it out the light comes on and you can easily charge it via a micro USB socket with the battery providing up to 7 hours of constant charge.

Of course the clever bit about the lamp is that it can be controlled via your smartphone thanks to a free Android or iOS app which enables you to check battery life, adjust the lamp’s brightness and program it to switch on and off at certain times.

You can also switch the light on and off via the app without having the hassle of using a light switch! It can be used outdoors too.

Available in two finishes – German Blonde Birch or American Black Walnut – the Orilamp currently costs $89 USD each on Indiegogo here.
