Skype updates ‘Snapchat’ like messaging system Qik with captions and music

Microsoft has updated its ephemeral messaging app, Skype Qik on iOS with added support for captions, music and photos.

Similar to rival app Snapchat, Qik will now let you add captions to your videos, displayed as an overlay on top of your clip (see screenshot below).

You can also add music to your video message by selecting a track from your iTunes library. However Qik doesn’t let you choose a snippet of a song for your video. Instead it plays your chosen track from the beginning.

The app now lets you send photos too. Simply select them from your camera roll and send them together as a slide show.

Released in October, Skype Qik is designed for quick and easy shooting and sharing of videos through private chats, similar to Snapchat. And like that popular ephemeral messaging app for teenagers, Skype Qik allows for automatically disappearing content.

For example each video in the app lasts for two weeks before disappearing, and a video can be deleted before that – whether it’s been watched or not.

Optimised for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 7.0 or later, Skype Qik is available on the Apple’s app store for free. Microsoft hasn’t announced if or when Qik’s Android and Windows Phone apps will get these new features.
