Netflix’s first UK original series is coming next year, and it’s about the Queen

It’s been long rumoured that Netflix was planning an original series hailing from the UK, and now the company has announced that it’s true. The series is called The Crown and it’s based on the West End play The Audience.

The series will air on Netflix as a 10-part mini series sometime next year, and it will focus on the Queen’s relationships with some of Britain’s most infamous Prime Ministers. There are no specific details on which Prime Ministers they might be, but considering the use of ‘infamous’ it’s possible that someone might have tried to get Meryl Streep on the phone.

Sadly the cast is being kept as a closely guarded secret at this point. What we do know is that the series is being directed by Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours), the producer is Andy Harries (The Queen), and one of the writers is Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon). That’s a pretty stellar team considering there are six Oscar nominations shared between them.

Is anyone else hoping that Helen Mirren comes back to play the lead role?
