There are now lots of options if you’re looking for a video chat app for your iPhone or iPad. Spin, which launched only days ago is already looking set to shake up the industry with it’s promise of high quality video and sound – as well as sharing functionality. Sadly it is US-only at the moment, but we are expecting a UK launch soon. Until then who are the more established players, and what are they offering?
Skype have become almost ubiquitous in the world of online calling - to the point where the verb to “skype” someone, risks becoming a victim of genericide - like how “google” has become a word meaning “to search” (even if sometimes people are going to google on Bing). As you might expect, Skype has a fully featured app that can handle both video and audio calls, and also make calls to “real” phones around the world. It also has built in instant messaging and support for multiple people simultaneously. Plus it has the added advantage of almost everyone in the world already having an account.
