We've been expecting it for some time now, but it's official, you can now claim the .xxx domain name for your website, whether your speciality is crafts, gardening or hardcore porn.
Obviously the .xxx domain lends itself to the world of adult entertainment, but in actual fact any business can go and claim its domain in order to stop it being used for anything else. Just imagine if www.facebook.xxx took you to some kind of crazy foot fetish site?
The new .xxx suffix isn't just to make dodgy websites sound even more "saucy", but it will also mean that the sites can be easily scanned for malware and monitored regularly to identify adult content.
ICM registry, the company overseeing all of the .xxx domains, calls the introduction of the triple x a "win, win, win" situation due to the way it stops addicts from getting a nasty infection from their habit AND makes sure that little kids browsing the internet are less likely to arrive at an inappropriate site by accident.
For now the domains are open to businesses both in and out of the adult entertainment industry and they're able to go and claim their brand names, whether they plan to use them or just protect them from virtual squatters. After that initial 50 day period .xxx will be available to anyone, so if you've always been curious about dabbling in the world of adult entertainment you've now got no excuse.
