Five Game-Changing Motorola Phones

    Nice piece but…

Motorola’s innovation dates back further than that… if I had to pick five they would be:

The first ever hand-portable mobile (as it was called then). This pre dates digital GSM and was called (I think) the 8800.

The first ever active flip phone – the Motorola Micro-Tac (again pre-dates digital).

The Star Tac clamshell phone (which you pictured) took the active flip even further.

The Razr – a clamshell thing of beauty as you say

And the Defy – which is a really nice piece of Android work.

And don’t forget, when Apple first looked at the mobile phone space, they partnered briefly with Motorola as the recognised innovators in the field… but the fledgling Motorola Apple phone never really got off the ground and the lessons Apple learned ended up n the iPhone.

I regret not doing ten as I’d have included the Micro-tac, the 8800 and also the oval shaped one – forgotten its name – I loved that. Moto really did have some great handsets
