For the camera geek who doesn’t want to blow their savings on a camera, this new mid-range digital SLR from Pentax offers many of the advantages of the top end for less.

The K-r has a new-generation CMOS image sensor with approximately 12.4 effective megapixels which makes for high-quality, true-to-life image reproduction.

Cheap digital SLRs like the Canon 1000D cost about £290, while at the top end, for the Canon 5D for example, prices can spiral up to well over £1000. The Pentax K-r falls in the middle

The K-r has that cool paparrazzi function where you can take high-speed continuous shoots.The shooting mode records as many as 25 images (in JPEG recording format) in a single sequence at a maximum speed of approximately six images per second — the fastest of all entry-class models.

Pentax pack in anti-shake software, a large bright LCD viewfinder, and pin-sharp focussing. The body is also lightweight and compact for the specs.

It records high-definition video at 25fps.
