Xmas comes but once a year, and once the presents have been open, the shiny wrapping discarded you're left with the Boxing Day aftermath. Say hello to toys you'll use once, novelty gifts and tat that you have nowhere to store, and ugly dresses your mum thinks you'll 'grow into'. The credit crunch may be scaring the nation but the discarded tinsel and packaging boxes in your bin Boxing Day beg to differ. How about getting your loved ones something different, such as an experience they'll treasure forever? Welcome to Airkix indoor skydiving.

For those who are to chicken (or broke) for the real thing, this is as close to flying as you'll get, suspended in a vertical wind tunnel that thrusts you upwards. With trained practitioners on hand to teach you how to float, turn and for the very adventurous, flip (needless to say I didn't do that) it's an unforgettable experience, and only a short train ride away.

After a briefing session and some training on basic posture and hand signals (the wind is so loud you can't hear a word) you enter the tunnel for your allotted time. The experience is difficult to describe as the when you're literally thrown into the air, all notion of time and perspective go out the door. Floating along, you become aware that it's a lot harder than it looks, and it's surprising how much it takes out of you. This is one gift that doesn't have a sell by date, and you can rest assured there'll be no wrapping paper to recycle.
