Bad Apple: Apple misleads in iPhone 3G advert (again)

bad_apple.jpgWhat is it with Apple and bending the truth about the iPhone's internet capabilities? This marks the second time Apple has breached the advertising code and has been reprimanded for making claims the infamous handset can't live up to. It's a mystery as to why - the iPhone is probably the most wanted phone on the planet right now. People would give a limb just to have one, so it's not like the porkies were necessary.

This time round, the claim involves accessing the internet and being able to download content on the iPhone 3G "really fast". 17 disgruntled iPhone 3G owners (and probably a lot more who couldn't be bothered to complain) complained the ad was misleading for "exaggerating the speed of the iPhone 3G". The 3G model is unmistakably faster then its predecessor, but I wouldn't say it's "really fast". Check out the speed test between both models here and have a look for yourself.

Apple retaliated by saying the claims made were "relative rather than absolute in nature" and was a comparison between the 2G and 3G versions. We work in tech so we know to take statements like this with a pinch of salt, but the bog standard consumer interprets this kind of information as fact. Especially when coupled with speedy visuals. So needless to say, the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) have been all over Apple like an irritable rash and subsequently, the ad was banned. I doubt it'll damage sales too much though.
