Google wants you to browse through 2001

Google wants to take you back to 2001, where things like Facebook, Shiny Shiny and Susi Weaser were unrecognisable search terms. It was Google's 10th birthday a couple of weeks ago - happy birthday to you etc - so Google geeks decided to bring back a version of their search engine as it was in 2001, including the index. It was a very *very* different kind of internet back then (and probably didn't have half as many of the users and abusers it does now), and may surprise some of you with its primitiveness. It didn't even give you the option to search maps, images, the web etc (shock horror). Just to give you a taste - when searching Gary Glitter his website comes up top. Do it in today's search engine and 'Gary banned from foreign trip' is what appears first! Ahh how times have changed.

Fast forward nearly seven years from this 2001 search engine and the internet is an overly abused (and not forgetting overly useful) global network, which some take for granted and over rely on its powers. However, on the flipside, it is an incredible source for almost anything you can think of. If you want to know about Goliath bird eating spiders, you can literally find out *everything* there is to know about Goliath bird eating spiders - images, videos and parodies included.

What were you up to in 2001 - do you even remember using this antediluvian search engine? I'm in no position to comment about its structure and efficiency. I was 17 at the time and not the geekstress I am today. All I know is it was no where as advanced as the Google we know and rely on today. You must have a browse. Seriously search with it. Search for something common today that didn't exist back in the day like Facebook and Twitter, or Perez Hilton. It's a little weird.
