MySpace has gone and done it with MySpace Music, so this bit of news was... well, inevitable - Facebook now wants a piece of the digital music pie. The man behind it all, Mark Zuckerberg, is in talks with a variety of digital music services and community sites including iLike, Rhapsody and iMeem about an outsourcing deal. Facebook bigwigs have also been busy setting up meetings with major record labels.
Zuckerberg wants to do things a little differently as well - perhaps to get out MySpace Music's shadow? So, rather than securing licenses to distribute music, Facebook doesn't want anything to do with what I presume they deem hassle. Facebook folk also don't want to build a money making music service entirely from scratch.
Sources are telling us nothing is imminent and Facebook may ultimately walk away from it altogether. Whether that's been said to build up momentum, we don't know. Alls we know is don't expect to see this service advertised any time soon. But we'll keep you posted with any updates and official release as soon as we know.
