You'd be forgiven for being wary of someone offering you DRM-free music, from major record labels, to keep forever, for a one-off cost. We've been burnt before, after all. But that appears to be what newcomer Datz is offering - you buy the 'Datz Music Lounge Gift Box' (a CD and a USB stick) for £100 and you then have access to the catalogues of labels including EMI, Warner, Beggars Group and The Orchard. Half the majors and a pretty major indie, then. Not bad.

Once you've downloaded as much music as you want, you're free to then transfer it to any music player as MP3 files. The subscription lasts 12 months, although the music you download is yours forever.

What's the catch? Well, there's an ominous phrase in the press release, "a wide selection of new music released in 2009 will be available to Datz Music Lounge members", indicating that perhaps not all of the new releases will be available. I guess the problem will be that once you've paid your £100, you're committed. A smart move by Datz it would seem.

But, for all our world weary cynicism, we'll be interested to see if this really can break the mould in music distribution.
