Word in the tech world (as opposed to the street) is that Asus, those ubiquitous little Eee PC makers will be the next to release a Google Android based smartphone in the first half of 2009 - let's hope they don't slap Eee at the beginning!
With Motorola tipped to be bringing out its own Android handset around the same time, it's clear to see, the race is on. Sources say Asus plans to launch the handset in Asia first, and if it proves successful they'll consider the prospect of bringing it to other parts of the world, rebranding it for carrier clients abroad.
It may come as a bit of a surprise, but Asus has been making Windows Mobile enabled smartphones for a while now, but has been lacking in the impact department, so might struggle persuading anyone to take it on. Whatever the outcome, an Asus Android based smartphone sounds exciting.
