A little while ago, folks down at the Beeb decided it's high time to stop giving preference to Apple's latest offspring (iPhone and iPod Touch) and Nokia's N96, and promised to bring the iPlayer to as many platforms as possible. They've seen that promise through, and the iPlayer is now compatible with a wide range of PMPs. That means it's more than likely the iPlayer can now be housed on your favourite Archos device and my personal favourite, the Sony Walkman.
Compatible devices include Philips Go Gear 52xx series, Sony Walkman E and S series, the Archos 605 Internet Media Tablet, and Samsung YP-P2 and YP-Q1 players. It's pretty much compatible with any device that supports Windows Media protected content. Take a look at the full list here.
There's one crucial feature missing from these players - WiFi - but that doesn't matter. You don't need to stream content to reap the benefits of iPlayer, you'll just need to pick a suitable version for your device in your browser and download the content to your PC. Once the latest episode of, let's say, Heroes has downloaded, drop it straight into your device's memory and enjoy.
The BBC has even produced a handy guide to assist you and your gadget, to help you work out what kind of service your gadget supports. If Mac and Linux users are feeling a little left out in the cold, another release aimed at improving your BBC iPlayer options is coming very soon. Keep your eyes peeled for updates.
