When I looked at the Oyster card/Nokia phone/cashless payment RFID technology from O2 in December, it was a disaster. Pretending your phone is an Oyster card makes you look stupid when it doesn't work on public transport, and using it to make cashless payments when no one in any shops has any idea of the pilot is difficult. But it seems I'm in the minority.
O2 has released the results of the six month RFID trial, and it appears to be a resounding success. The majority of users wanted to hang on to it, nine out of ten found the technology easy to use.
O2 hasn't committed themselves to a time scale on when this RFID stuff might be released to the masses, but they have said they're working with handset manufacturers other than Nokia to see if they can integrate it into their handsets. At least they'll be more than the Nokia 6131 on offer.
