Mir:ror Mir:ror on the wall : Who's the cleverest RFID reader of them all?

Who doesn't love the Nabaztag bunnies? Sure, the instructions may be more difficult to work out than winning Come Dine with Me with a vegan recipe, but they're so sweet that we don't really care. A new addition is joining their family, and I'm sad to say it's NOT the cute lion on the left, it's the pad it's sitting on. And what is it?

It's a consumer RFID tag reader. You attach it to your computer via USB and it will read any RFID tags you place on it. But what would you use it for? Well, quite a lot of things actually.

Perhaps you'd like to know when the kids get home from school? Attach an RFID stamp to their house keys, and tell them to put them on the MIr:ror when they get in and you'll get sent an email alert. How about tagging your favourite book with similar websites, and using it to save all your bookmarks? Or you could arrange for a cuddly toy to launch a Disney film, without having to worry about passwords.

The kit comes with a selection of RFID stamps that attach to anything you like. When placed on the reader they send a unique ID to your computer and will immediately launch the application of your choosing. This sounds like it could be fun, but I'd need to see it in action for a final verdict.

Am I the only one who is frightened by this? I dont like the concept of RFID, especially since it has been forced over my head (well, passport strictly speaking) by no other than the United States itself. And I live in Norway...

Violet dont have a good reputation with getting RFID working. Certainly my bunny which is a few years old has was promised to have RFID sniffing, but its just never happened :-(

Nice ideas, but the actual delivery sucks.

Mir:ror is available at www.violet.net

@FatMax: It scares me too . . . which is why I'm writing reflek:tor, a replacement driver and automation program for use with the mir:ror. It'll free you from having to let Violet in on your RFID activity.
